Background Information:
There are 3 areas that need traffic related improvements and upgrades:
1- San Marnan in the vicinity of Crossroads: The new state of the art Traffic Adaptive
technologies can provide an opportunity to improve traffic operations particularly during
the shopping peak hours and shopping seasons. Fiber optics connections, more
detections, and new controllers will be needed.
2- Downtown Retiminq: The traffic patterns, traffic generation, and street directions have
changed. The coordination and synchronization timing is now very inefficient except on
the one-way pairs. Re -timing is needed about every 3 years. Last time the signals were
retimed was 13 years ago. Many things have changed since then.
3- Central Control System: Waterloo is the only city in Iowa that is still using the old closed
loop central control system. This is a 1980's technology and has been replaced my
advanced central control systems. Other jurisdictions have upgraded many years ago.
