HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes-11/19/2014 (2)Waterloo Cultural and Arts Commission Board Meeting Hurwich Room November 19, 2014 4:00 pm In Attendance: David Deeds, Tom Wickersham, Dianne Phelps, Robert Bembridge, Terry Rice, Marisa VanDorn, Scot Cawelti, Pat Morrissey and Ron Welper Staff: Kent Shankle, Paulette Hawkenson, Jason Welch , and JoLyn Lennox President, David Deeds called the Commission Board meeting to order at 4:03 pm. A motion to approve the August 20th minutes was entered by Scot Cawelti and seconded by Dianne Phelps. The minutes were approved as presented. Finance Report/ Hawkenson • Paulette reviewed the year to date Final Budget with the board. The 2015 budget has used 40% of budgeted expenses and to date we have received 44 per cent of budgeted revenues. • Our current class registrations are running very well and room rentals have been robust as well. A motion to accept the financial report was entered by Tom Wickersham. The motion was accepted. President's Report -Executive Committee/ Deeds • Final report of the Strategic Planning sessions will be presented in January 2015. • New staff member Jason Welch was introduced to the Commission. • Members were encouraged to invite friends to the next Party With Friends event: Dinner with the Vicar on December 6, 2014 at 6:15 pm. • November 29, 2014 WCA will participate in the 2nd Annual Holiday Fudge Walk from 10:00 — 2:00. This is to help with Small Business Saturday Nominating Committee • There will be a slate of new officers in January 2015. • A by-law amendment was made to make the Chair and Vice Chair positions 2 year terms. The motion was made by Dianne Phelps; seconded by Scot Cawelti and the motion carried. • Chair, David Deeds and Vice Chair, Matt Rolinger have agreed to serve another year in their current positions. Visitor Services Committee • Gift Store sales were: July $593.20; August $1,074.20; September $800.80; October $742.70 • PYP/FunSpace admissions were: August 1,339; September 670; October 794 • Memberships sold from August 1, 2014 to November 19, 2014 = 23 • WCA participated in the Main Street Trick or Treat event with over 200 people participating • On November 11th the Committee met and discussed restructuring the Gift Store area the following options were considered: o making it an artists' coop o installing active play equipment o using an independent contractor for admissions and sales items o relocating some retail activities • Renovations on the Grand Foyer were also discussed. • WCA's 50th Anniversary will be in 2016 Education Committee/VanDorn • The next Jag III exhibit will be the Super -Powers of Art • The Spring class schedule is nearing completion, expected to be published in January • The 1— 3 year plan is to begin a docent training program Collections & Exhibitions Committee/Wickersham • The Collections & Exhibitions Committee maybe combined with the Public Art Committee after the first of the year. • Numerous works of art were approved on November 7, 2014 and will be added to the WCA's Permanent Collection Public Art Committee / Phelps • There will be on sculpture for the Lou Henry exhibit and 9 plaques. Friends of the Art Center/ Rice • Stem & Stein was a success making over $ 12,000.00 • The Holiday Arts Festival was reasonably well attended. Director's Report / Shankle • Classes are doing very well. • Holiday Arts Festival was successful. The Friends "Recycled" Art booth was able to sell $ 1,500.00 in art work. • 2"d Sundays of the Month WCA now hosts Jazz at the Center • Beginning in February 2015, Jag III will be changed to the "Super Powers of Art • Forsberg Gallery will open the Haitian Exhibit, "Objects of Power", with the Gallery talk on November 20, 2014 at 6:00 pm. • Wartburg College will have a Haitian Exhibit "Mirroring the Lives of Haitian Women". • The Boathouse has been turned over to the WCA for rentals. • Consideration is being given to a "City Pass" that would include multiple Cultural attractions. • Bi -Weekly meeting with the Arthouse Cafe are being held. The Arthouse Cafe has added hours to their business schedule, they will now be open on Monday's from 7:00 am until 3:00 pm. • External signage has been repainted. New carpet will be put in the Hope Martin Theatre and walls are being constructed in Law Court Theatre. It has also been determined that the curtains in the Hope Martin Theatre are fire retardant. • Construction will begin in February 2015 on the west side restrooms, to remodel and increase their capacity. This renovation is expected to take approximately 4 months to finish. NEXT MEETING will be held on December 17, 2014 at 4:00 pm —?, at Kent Shankles's home. The meeting was adjourned at 5:01 pm.
