MSW has held monthly volunteer -driven meetings for committees established through the four -point approach: Design Review, Economic Restructuring, Organization & Promotions. Meetings have been held on a monthly basis, with each council meeting during the 1st week of every month. DESIGN In 2017, Main Street Waterloo reviewed & approved 21 signage and i`acade requests including outdoor spaces for Volks Haus, Newton's Cafe, Cibo, Singlespeed & The Saloon. ECONOMIC VITALITY In 2017, Economic Vitality council has worked to recruit businesses. In addition, the committee is working to establish a marketing co-op and has secured an underwriter for the program. ORGANIZATION Organization council has worked to organize over 2,100 hours, ($49,476 in volunteer time). In addition, we've worked to make the MSW more user-friendly and a better tool for businesses. PROMOTIONS Promotions Council has successfully executed 22 days; of events, with revived older events & brand new events. In total, we'v estimated 39,00`. attendees just from MSW events. In addition to regularly scheduled meetings, these committees have subcommittees that delve deeper into planning and implementation, all with a volunteer lead. The fruits of these committee efforts are Updated Main Street Waterloo logos & website Public engagement on issues such as 4th Street Canopy Bridge & Bike Lanes on Park Avenue DOWN1OWN WAI MOO PARTICIPATE IN DOWNTOWN EVENTS MSW hosted a total of 16 events, spanning 20 days, attracting 39,000 attendees. TASTE OF `LOO is MWS's opportunity to showcase the variety of dining options in Waterloo's downtown. 2016 saw 300 attendees, circulating to 13 different restaurants throughout downtown. The event is held in early March, which is typically a slow month for restaurants. FUNKY JUNK -A -LOO is a March event in it's 3rd year. Every year, the event had grown, with 4,600 attendees in 2016 (51% coming from outside of Black Hawk County). Local restaurants reported a 21% increase over the previous year. FRIDAY'LOO is our city's Friday After Work event. We have seen an uptick in attendance this year through collaboration with other entities throughout our city, including Cedar Valley Blue -Zones and a new Friday evening farmers market groups. MY WATERLOO DAYS is a city-wide annual festival that brought thousands to Downtown Waterloo. In 2017, we made major shifts in the event, including a change in venue, in keeping with Main Street Waterloo's mission, new offerings like the Lighted Boat Parade and return of the MWD Parade back down 41h Street. Nightlife establishments particularly welcomed the return of Saturday night to downtown, with reports as high as 36% increase over the previous year. MAYOR'S INDEPENDENCE DAY FESTIVAL was a new event for 2017. The event had an estimated 4,000 attendees and was largely considered a successful celebration, bringing attendees from across our community through live entertainment. BBQ'Loo & BLUES TOO is Waterloo's annual BBQ event. The Two -Day festival features live blues and lots of BBQ. Teams come from all over the mid -west and beyond. MAYOR'S FUN RUN is an annual event with 41h graders from Waterloo Community Schools and the Mayor of Waterloo running through the streets of Downtown Waterloo. TOUR de'LOO is an opportunity for the 250 attendees to see first-hand the progress that is continually made in Downtown Waterloo each year. The tour provides attendees the chance to go into recent developments/re-developed spaces throughout Downtown. DOWNTOWN TRICK -or -TREAT is the annual Halloween event that brings families downtown as the Holiday season officially kicks off. In 2016, roughly 500 children and their families partook in the Halloween Downtown Showcase. WINTER WONDER'LOO is a Christmas event focused on bringing families downtown, with Santa & his elves bringing joy to over 1,000 attendees. In 2016, we moved the date of the event to coordinate with Small Business Saturday and a Downtown tree lighting ceremony. Local establishments reported an increase in traffic throughout the day and are excited for the upcoming promotion. BUSINESS CONTACTS Executive Director, Tavis Hall, has visited with district business owners, property owners and developers. Whether it be through regular contact, simple "check - ins" or issue -based visits, MSW has represented Downtown interests by gauging downtown opinion and representing those opinions to all interested parties. In 2017/2018, issues on the docket are Downtown parking, occupancy of commercial spaces and connectivity of the city's east & west side. We look forward to continuing to help identify creative solutions to these issues. PARTICIPATE IN 12 DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS RAMADA / HOTEL RL FIVE SULLIVAN BROTHERS CONVENTION CENTER SINGLESPEED BREWERY SIDECAR COFFEE KWWL COMMUNITY BANK & TRUST GRAND CROSSING IDB SHOE HEAVEN CIBO ON THE ROCKS RODNEY'S KITCHEN TRACK CAPITAL INVESTMENTS MADE IN DOWNTOWN 2017 saw $16,190,059 in improvement value in the Downtown from 8 different projects, including Hawkeye Community College and the Grand Crossing project. While there have been many more projects completed in 2016/17, the number of permits demonstrates a solid growth within the district. Projects like the Hotel RL, Waterloo Convention Center at Five Sullivan Brothers Plaza, Art Mall & others will all come on the books in 2018. DOWNTOWN IS HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION! COMMERCIAL MARKETING PROGRAM MSW is in the midst of organizing a marketing co-op, which will allow businesses to buy into a Downtown Waterloo marketing program. Marketing outlets will include, but are not limited to, commercials (TV & Radio), online & web -based ads and printing at a nominal fee. COORDINATE EFFORTS WITH GOVERNMENT AGENCIES IN DOWNTOWN Main Street Waterloo took a more active year in advocating for the needs of Downtown Waterloo. 4th Street Canopy Bridge & Park Avenue Bike Lanes were two efforts with MSW engaging citizens and business owners in setting the direction for our Downtown. The results are a more engaged citizenry and a stronger sense of self from existing Downtown Businesses. DOWNTOWN HOUSING The efforts are never completed "DONE," but with the addition of the Grand Crossing development and the Art Block project coming in late 2017, we are excited about bring more and more people to our city center. ADVISE AND ASSIST WITH DOWNTOWN RIVERFRONT Main Street Waterloo has served on Riverloop Amphitheatre Inc board and worked with RAI to program the Amphitheatre space for multiple events. In 2017, Main Street Waterloo sponsored events bringing over 9,000 attendees to the riverfront space. In addition, Main Street Waterloo looks to continue to search for viable tenants in the currently vacant Public Market.
