ORAL PRESENTATIONS
102453 - Mayor Rooff stated that the Waterloo Police Tactical Unit was called out today. This
was their 67th mission since 1989 without incident.
Councilperson Getty stated he was unhappy with the condition of our streets, with no
sand being applied to them. He had several calls today in regard to various
intersections. He stated the intersections are a catastrophe waiting to happen as
they are very slick.
Councilperson Krizek stated she had the same questions as Councilperson Getty, and
she was told the street department was sanding. She stated she came from a meeting
at the airport, and there was no sand on the streets she had traveled, which were
fairly heavy traveled roads.
John Meyer, Public Works Director, responded that with the wind chill we have had,
the sand was simply freezing on the trucks and the trucks had to be parked indoors.
He stated they will be going out tonight at midnight with warm sand, warm trucks and
will be addressing the situation and have sand at the intersections for the morning
commute. He will have basically 8 loads that will do all the priority streets but
not the residential.
Councilperson Mollenhoff stated he, as well as Councilperson Krizek, would suggest
we call the members of the press to issue a public service message so the public
could be informed as to what is happening. It would be a user friendly move on the
city's part.
