HomeMy WebLinkAbout06/14/93CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION
June 14, 1993
6:00 p.m.
Large Conference Room
Members present: Mayor Manning, Buck, Budak, Fox, Lemke and
Wright.
Absent: Angel and Dell.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss proposed plans for future
development by Allen Hospital generally located in an area north of
Donald Street and west of US Hwy 63. Larry Pugh, President of
Allen Hospital, provided maps showing the proposed areas of
development including the extension of Heath Street and its
eventual connection to US Hwy 63 north. The property currently
under the ownership of Allen Hospital was delineated and a
schematic shown for the proposed school of nursing. A five-year
fund drive has exceeded expectations and will allow an educational
wing to begin construction. Construction is also currently
underway at the main Allen Hospital site on a $16.5 million project
that will be completed in September 1993. Although no additional
beds are being added with this construction, Allen has experienced
a large increase in patient load.
Developer Robert Rapport is proposing the construction of four
cottages each with four units that would house Alzheimer's
patients. The complex would be appropriately designed for
Alzheimer's patients and would feature around the clock staffing.
The city's efforts in assisting Allen on this project include the
vacation of the streets in Wainer Heights which is the area for the
proposed cottages as well as the extension of Heath Street from
Donald Street easterly to US Hwy 63. It was also noted that Donald
Street located generally west of Hwy 63 will also be reconstructed
in the next few years. Allen Hospital is also dedicating right of
way on the northerly edge of Donald Street to accommodate its
eventual widening.
No official action was taken by the council. Mr. Pugh was thanked
for his presentation and the meeting was adjourned at 6:22 p.m.
