PARTICIPATE IN DOWNTOWN EVENTS
Main Street Waterloo hosted a total of 12 events,
spanning 31 days, attracting 40,000 attendees.
FRIDAY'L00 is our city's Friday After Work event with 8 dates throughout the summer. Last summer we
saw an increase in attendance through collaboration with entities throughout our city and have continued this
into 2018. Collaborators include groups such as Healthy Hometown, Cedar Valley Bike Collective, and The
Runner's Flat.
MY WATERLOO DAYS is a 4 day, city-wide annual festival bringing thousands to Downtown Waterloo. In
2018 we selected entertainment and marketed around the theme: Prince's"Let's Go Crazy."The city
embraced this theme and came out in support, with our largest Friday night crowd in years. Due to a severe
weather threat and flood warnings, we had to cancel the Saturday events for the safety of the attendees,
vendors, and entertainers. We successfully added a new event, Drive-in at the Expo to wrap up the
festivities.
MAYOR'S INDEPENDENCE DAY EXTRAVAGANZA was a new event in 2017 with an estimated 4,000
attendees. This year is looking to be even larger with more live music and entertainment added to the lineup
and the rescheduling of several of the My Waterloo Days events that had to be canceled due to weather.
BBQ'L00 & BLUES TOO is Waterloo's annual BBQ event. The two day festival features live blues and
BBQ. Teams come from all over the mid-west and beyond.
MAYOR'S FUN RUN is an annual event with 4th graders from Waterloo Community Schools and the Mayor
of Waterloo running through the streets of Downtown Waterloo.
RESTAURANT WEEK is a state-wide Main Street promotion to visit locally owned restaurants. We worked
with several Downtown eateries to provide a unique dining experience.
TOUR DE'L00 is an opportunity for 250 attendees to see first-hand the progress that is continually made in
Downtown Waterloo each year. The tour provides attendees the chance to go into recent developments and
re-developed spaces throughout Downtown.
DOWNTOWN TRICK-OR-TREAT is the annual Halloween event that brings families downtown as the
Holiday season officially kicks off. In 2017, roughly 700 children and their families partook in the Halloween
Downtown Showcase.
WINTER WONDER'L00 is a Christmas event focused on bringing families downtown, with Santa& his
elves brining joy to over 1,000 attendees. Children are given the opportunity to pick out gifts for family
members followed by a tree lighting ceremony.
SHOP SMALL SATURDAYS is a national event encouraging the community to shop at locally owned
stores. In 2017 we took this event to the next level and hosted Shop Downtown Saturdays for the entire
holiday season. Partnering with downtown property owners, we were able to have 10 pop-up shops as well
as promote all of the downtown businesses.
FUNKY JUNK-A-L00 is re-purposed paradise bringing vendors from all over the Midwest to showcase their
merchandise. Even with a late season blizzard, more than 3,000 attendees traveled to Downtown Waterloo
to shop and dine.
TASTE OF `L00 is our opportunity to showcase the variety of dining options in Downtown Waterloo. 2018
saw more than 200 attendees visiting 11 different restaurants throughout downtown. We moved the event to
April to showcase the walkability of downtown.
BUSINESS CONTACTS
Former Executive Director, Tavis Hall, and new
Executive Director, Jessica Rucker, have visited ...,
with district business owners, property owners, and
developers. Whether it be through regular contact,
check-in visits, introductory visits, or issue-based
visits, MSW has represented downtown interests -
by gauging downtown opinion and representing
those opinions to all interested parties.
In 2018/2019, continued issues are downtown parking, occupancy of commercial spaces and connectivity of the
city's east &west side. We look forward to continuing to help identify creative solutions to these issues.
