HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes-05/20/2019COUNCIL WORK SESSION May 20, 2019 4:320 p.m. Harold E. Getty Council Chambers Members present: Morrissey, Feuss, Klein, Amos, Schmitt, and Juon. Absent: Jacobs. Moved by Schmitt seconded by Amos that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Voice -vote Ayes: Six. Motion carried. Objective: Review of proposed bicycle ordinance. Sandie Greco, Traffic Superintendent, explained that the purpose of the ordinance is to update the current ordinance and establish safety rules for bicyclists in Waterloo both on the streets and on the trails. Mohammad Elahi, Traffic Engineer, provided an overview of the ordinance. Mrs. Klein questioned if fifteen year olds should have training or a permit for riding on motorized bikes. Mohammad Elahi agreed, but explained that the state laws are not in sync with the technology. Mr. Schmitt questioned if there is a written test for a youth riding a motorized bike. Mohammad Elahi explained that the state does not have a written test. Mr. Schmitt questioned if other cities in the Cedar Valley have similar ordinances and if those were consulted to create similarities between cities. Mohammad explained that they did look at other cities but felt it would be best to create an ordinance that addresses safety needs for Waterloo. Objective: Update from Grow Cedar Valley. Carrie Darrah, Lisa Skubal, Will Frost, and Wes James of Grow Cedar Valley (formerly known as the Greater Cedar Valley Alliance and Chamber) provided an update on external marketing and business growth, talent recruitment and retention initiatives, updated goals and communication metrics for the organization, advocacy and engagement with state and federal legislators, and the TechWorks Campus. With no further business before the Council, it was moved by Schmitt seconded by Amos that the meeting be adjourned at 4:45 p.m. Voice -vote Ayes: Six. Motion carried. Kelley Felc City Clerk
