HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes-10/23/2019 MEMORIAL HALL COMMISSION October 23, 2019 5:00 p.m. Veterans Memorial Hall Members present: Craig White in the Chair, Randy Miller, Rodney Butz, Scott McDonald, Marcia Courbat, Don Ticknor, Mel Wittwer, Marilyn Robinson, Frank McCaw, Mike Mrzlak and Jim Lentfer. Absent: John Mrzlak(A) and Angela Hickok(A) and Nancy Higby, Administrative Secretary. Also in Attendance: Kelley Felchle, City Clerk. Moved by Miller, seconded by Ticknor, that the Agenda be approved. Ayes: Eleven. Motion carried. Moved by Miller, seconded by Butz, that the Minutes of September 25, 2019, as presented, be approved. Ayes: Eleven. Motion carried. Citizen's Oral Comments None. Treasurer's Report Marcia Courbat reported that the brick fund as of October 23, 2019 is $6,964.71 and the flag fund is $486.28. She explained that 4017 Veteran's bricks have been sold at $50 each. Cash taken in on brick sales alone stands at$200,850 and there have been a lot of donations as well. Chairperson's Report None. Committee Reports Building, Grounds & Operations—Chairperson Mel Wittwer Charles Pearson provided an overview of the Civil War to Civil Rights History Bus Tour on November 15, 2019 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. It is expected there will be approximately 40- 50 people. Moved by Wittwer, and seconded by Miller, to support the Civil War to Civil Rights Bus Tour for 2 hours on November 15th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. People will come to the building and commission members will provide tours. Ayes: Eleven. Motion carried. Education/Historical—Chairperson Randall Miller Randy Miller reported that he is looking for new volunteers to help with honer guard. He explained he is also looking to integrate honor guard with historical remembrances, including WWI, Veterans Day, etc. Craig White commented this could integrate with honor flights. Veterans Day event is scheduled for November 11th and the program will start at 10:15 to get time to get everyone on the Plaza for rifle salute. Craig White is trying to recruit for honor flights as well Mike Merzlak needs date for putting up flags. Miller explained the flags will go up November 8th beginning at 8:30 a.m. Finance/Fundraising—Chairperson Marcia Courbat October 23, 2019 Page 2 Marcia explained that she has asked John Deere for donations and they are reviewing that request now. Marcia commented that she has turned in 11 bricks for engraving for a total of$275. The brick list will need to be updated and this responsibility will be handed off to Mel Wittwer in the future. Marcia reported that she has made revision suggestions to the brick order form. Randy Miller said to table the issue to New Business. Artifacts Preservation— Chairperson James Lentfer Jim Lentfer reported that Computer Reboot looks to be the best option for a computer at a cost of $375 plus software at $25. A laptop is recommended so that it can be moved around the building. It may be possible to get a veteran discount on a laptop. Rick Hurtado stated that he will pay for the laptop. Craig White said to go to Best Buy to get a new one and use the city's tax ID to avoid sales tax. In addition, they will get a veterans discount. Randy Miller needs to make sure it has wireless mouse and is capable of doing presentations. Jim Lentfer explained that the desired software is $600. Jim requested reimbursement of$34.77 for the cost of glass for the lithograph. He stated that the glass purchased did not fit the frame. Moved by Lentfer, seconded by Butz to reimburse Jim in the amount of$34.77. Ayes: Eleven. Motion carried. Unfinished Business None. New Business The commission discussed closing the post office box and making the new address 316 E. 5ffi Street, Memorial Hall, Attn: Craig White. The refund for unused post office box fees will go back to the city. Jim proposed making people pay more to put families together. Randy Miller commented that people should not pay more for putting families together. Craig White commented that Elk Run Heights wants a donation from the county to start a veteran's memorial in their community. With no further business before the commission, it was moved by White, seconded by Miller, that the meeting be adjourned at 5:57p.m. Ayes: Eleven. Motion carried. Kelley Felchle City Clerk
