HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes-11/28/2018 MEMORIAL HALL COMMISSION November 28, 2018 5:00 p.m. Veterans Memorial Hall Members present: Craig White in the Chair, Dick Hastings, Scott McDonald, Marcia Courbat, Don Ticknor, Mel Wittwer, Marilyn Robinson, Mike Mrzlak, Jim Lentfer, and John Mrzlak (A). Absent: Randy Miller, Jim Petersen. Also in Attendance: Nancy Higby, Administrative Secretary. Moved by J. Mrzlak, seconded by McDonald, that the Agenda be approved. Ayes: Ten. Motion carried. Moved by J. Mrzlak, seconded by Wittwer, that the Minutes of October 24, 2018, be approved. Ayes: Ten. Motion carried. Citizen's Oral Comments Richard Hurtado submitted some proposals from Meyers Nursery for landscaping on the grounds around Memorial Hall building. Treasurer's Report Marcia Courbat provided an update on the Brick Fund balance as of November 28, 2018, with an opening balance of$12,302.83. The following invoices were presented for payment. Black Hawk Memorial Co. (Engraving of 19 bricks $475.00 Randy Miller (Samsung Model # QN82Q6FNAFXZA big screen TV $2,849.95 Nelson Electric (Display case lighting ower) $1,505.00 Mel Wittwer(Display case LED lighting needs) $167.58 Dick Hastings 2 15 7/8 x 32 '/z - '/4" glass for display cases) $57.59 General Sheet Metal Remove and install Hand Rails $775.00 Modern Painting (Painting of damaged ceiling due to water leak) $583.15 Moved by J. Wittwer, seconded by J. Mrzlak, that the invoices as presented, except for Modern Painting in the amount of$583.15, be approved. Ayes: Ten. Motion carried Craig White stated that he would approach the Mayor to discuss the railing and paint projects and seek reimbursement for the cost of the handrails and request the painting project be covered by the city's building maintenance budget. Marcia Courbat commented that the cost of the railing and painting should be the responsibility of building maintenance and covered by the city. She further commented that these expenditures will leave the brick fund very low and brick orders are down. She intends to mail information on how to order bricks to all the various leagues in an effort to increase brick sales. Craig White mentioned that he will be speaking with Tim Jamison at the Courier about an article on Veterans, and will have him include information about how to order bricks. He further mentioned that monies will be available following the raffle of the televisions on Memorial Day. He will get rolls of tickets which will be available at the next meeting. Chairperson's Report Committee Reports Building, Grounds & Operations—Chairperson Richard Hastings Dick Hastings showed the commission members the display cases with the improved lighting and glass shelving. Education/Historical—Chairperson Randall Miller None. (Randy Miller was Absent) November 28, 2018 Page 2 Jim Lentfer mentioned that he witnessed the tattered condition of many of the flags around the city and that it may be necessary to purchase new flags and poles next year. Craig White mentioned he would look into getting new flags at a good price. A discussion took place regarding the possibility of having a local sewing or saddle shop add extra stitching around the flags for reinforcement. Finance/Fundraising—Chairperson Marcia Courbat Marcia Courbat commented that the application to request funds from the Isle was given to Nancy Higby at the last meeting. Mel Wittwer questioned that application and stated it appeared to be a request to fund a particular event, not for grant monies. Mel will seek clarification from the Isle on the process to request grant funding. Marcia Courbat questioned if hotel/motel tax funds could be obtained for flag purchases. Artifacts Preservation— Chairperson Mel Wittwer Mel Wittwer commented that he is working on completing the labeling for the artifact room. Unfinished Business None. New Business Moved by J. Mrzlak, seconded by McDonald, to cancel the December meeting. Ayes: Ten. Motion carried. Craig White announced that the Amvet in Evansdale will be having a New Year's Eve party on December 31St, beginning at 7:00 p.m. including free admission and raffles. With no further business before the commission, it was moved by McDonald, seconded by J. Mrzlak,that the meeting be adjourned at 5:45 p.m. Ayes: Ten. Motion carried.
