Veterans Memorial Hall
Members present: White, Hastings, Hockey, Peyton, Courbat, Ticknor, Dennis, Hurtado,
Mrzlak, Ambrosy.
Members absent: Miller (present at 5:25 p.m.), Robinson, McMahon.
Also present: Carol Failor.
Moved by Ticknor, seconded by Dennis that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Ten.
Moved by Mrzlak, seconded by Courbat that the Minutes of June 26, 2013, as amended, be
approved. Ayes: Ten.
Citizens Oral Comments
None
Treasurer's Report
Marcia Courbat gave the Treasurer's Report. Ms. Courbat reported that the Commission has
sold 2,821 bricks at $50.00 each and 4 bricks at $250.00 each for a total of $142,050.00, with a
balance of $8,719.53 in the Brick Fund. She received $100.00 to add to the brick fund.
Ms. Courbat noted that she was contacted by an anonymous person who wants to donate a
television and tape player.
Chairperson's Report
Chairperson White reported that the last honor flight this year will be September 17, 2013. He
noted there have been funds stolen from several donation locations. There is a fundraiser for
Honor Flights on August 10, 2013 at the former Allerton-Axtell restaurant in Independence
where there will be a dinner, raffle and silent auction.
Committee Reports
Building, Grounds & Operations —Richard Hastings reported that someone had been in
Memorial Hall because the alarm had been turned off and the lights were left on. He presented
samples of window shades from 3 vendors.
Finance/Fundraising—Marcia Courbat reported that she had looked on the internet for possible
grants, and found that most organizations don't donate anything if it's going to be used for city -
owned buildings. She noted that someone had asked her how they could become a commission
member.
Operations —Michael Dennis reported that the Gold Star Mothers have expressed concem with
missing pictures.
Unfinished Business
Michael Dennis presented a copy of a letter from Attomey Alan Kirshen, Chief of Staff for the
Department of Iowa, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and a copy of an email from
Attorney Chris Wendland regarding the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) followed by
discussion.
New Business
Randy Herron noted that on September 16-18, 2013 there will be 40/8 Boxcar at Antique Acres
in Cedar Falls.

There was discussion of what money to use to pay for the new window shades. It was decided to
proceed in ordering the shades from Jim Aronson & Associates of Waterloo in the amount of
$4,580.00, which includes free installation.
With no further business before the Commission, it was moved by Hockey, seconded by Ticknor
that the meeting be adjoumed at 5:45 p.m. Ayes: Eleven.

Finance/Fundraising—Marcia Courbat reported that she had looked on the intemet for possible
grants, and found that most organizations don't donate anything if it's going to be used for city -
owned buildings. She noted that someone had asked her how they could become a commission
member.
Operations —Michael Dennis reported that the Gold Star Mothers have expressed concern with
missing pictures.
Unfinished Business
Michael Dennis presented a copy of a letter from Attorney Alan Kirshen, Chief of Staff for the
Department of Iowa, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and a copy of an email from
Attorney Chris Wendland regarding the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) followed by
discussion.
New Business
Randy Herron noted that on September 16-18, 2013 there will be 40/8 Boxcar at Antique Acres
in Cedar Falls.

There was discussion of what money to use to pay for the new window shades. It was decided to
proceed in ordering the shades from Jim Aronson & Associates of Waterloo in the amount of
$4,580.00, which includes free installation.
With no further business before the Commission, it was moved by Hockey, seconded by Ticknor
that the meeting be adjoumed at 5:45 p.m. Ayes: Eleven.

Veterans Memorial Hall
Members present: White, Hastings, Hockey, Peyton, Courbat, Ticknor, Dennis, Hurtado,
Mrzlak, Ambrosy.
Members absent: Miller (present at 5:25 p.m.), Robinson, McMahon.
Also present: Carol Failor.
Moved by Ticknor, seconded by Dennis that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Ten.
Moved by Mrzlak, seconded by Courbat that the Minutes of June 26, 2013, as amended, be
approved. Ayes: Ten.

Treasurer's Report
Marcia Courbat gave the Treasurer's Report. Ms. Courbat reported that the Commission has
sold 2,821 bricks at $50.00 each and 4 bricks at $250.00 each for a total of $142,050.00, with a
balance of $8,719.53 in the Brick Fund. She received $100.00 to add to the brick fund.
Ms. Courbat noted that she was contacted by an anonymous person who wants to donate a
television and tape player.
Chairperson's Report
Chairperson White reported that the last honor flight this year will be September 17, 2013. He
noted there have been funds stolen from several donation locations. There is a fundraiser for
Honor Flights on August 10, 2013 at the former Allerton-Axtell restaurant in Independence
where there will be a dinner, raffle and silent auction.
Committee Reports
Building, Grounds & Operations —Richard Hastings reported that someone had been in
Memorial Hall because the alarm had been turned off and the lights were left on. He presented
