USSJuaeoru(LPD-10),an:Itr tin -class antpbihious transport dock, is the third ship of
theltnitcd to be named for the capital of Alaska.
Her keel was laid down by 1.ockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company of Seattle.
Washington on 23 January: 1.965. She was launched on 12 February 1966 sponsored by
Mrs. William A. Egan, wife of William A. 1:can, the Governor of Alaska, and
commissioned on 12 .lily 1969.
Throughout the 1970s, Juneau completed five deployments to the western Pacific,
including eight trips into Vietnamese waters, earning five battle stars for its efforts in the
Vietnam War. Juneau conducted the first AV-8A Harrier landing on a Pacific Fleet LPD
in February 1976. On July 4,1976, the Juneau arrived in Juneau, Alaska with a
complement of Marines from 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division as part of
the United States' Bicentennial celebrations.
During the 1980s Juneau completed seven deployments. In April 1989, Juneau received
emergency orders to Prince William Sound in support of the l?xxon Valdez oil spill clean
up. She was the first Naval vessel on station, and assumed the duties of command and
control ship for Joint Task Force Alaska She provided berthing, communications,
transportation (both surface and air), food, medical and laundry services for over four
hundred civilian cleanup workers.
After the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and the initiation of Operas ion Desert Shield, Juneau
sailed with 12 other ships of Amphibious Group Three in December 1990 to participate
in Operation Desert Storm. Joining with ships from Amphibious Group Two, Juneau was
a member of the largest amphibious task force since the United Nations assault on
Inchon, South Korea. On 24 February 1991 .hneauu off-loaded its equipment and
ammunition in record time and landed its embarked troops at Ras Al Mishab, Saudi
Arabia, whence they would assault Iraqi positions in southern Kuwait.
In May 1991, 1w:eau proceeded to Bangladesh to assist in Operation Sea Angel,
providing relief after a disastrous cyclone.
During its 1481 deployment, Juneau was diverted to the coast of Somalia in support of
Operation Restore 1 lope. Her embarked Marines ensured the security of shipments of
food supplies to the people of Somalia.
.haueau was homeported in San Diego. C'alilbrnia until 30 July 1999 when she relieved
t 1 SS Dubuque (LPD-8) as part of the forward -deployed naval forces. Since that date she
has been homeported in Sasebo, Japan.
From June to September of 1999 Juneau participated in the first Si I I P-s W A P with her
sister -ship Dubuque, where each ship's crew remained in their original home ports,
allowing Dubuque to return to the homeport of San Diego, California.
She is currently underway with the US Essex, the USS Harpers Ferry, and the IJSS
Mustin in support of Operation Caring Response, the aid mission for Burma.
She is scheduled to SHIP -SWAP with her sister ship, the USS Denver (LPD-9) during the
third quarter of fiscal year 2008. After the swap, she is scheduled to sail to San Diego for
decommissioning

Moved by Miller, seconded by Dennis that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Eight.
The approval of the minutes of January 25, 2012 was postponed until the next meeting.
Citizens Oral Comments
Mr. Hastings noted that the Marine's meeting will not be held at Memorial Hall due to the group
out growing the facilities. 2012 Presidential calendars were received from the UAW838. Mr.
Hastings is working on building storage in the office.
Treasurer's Report
Ms. Courbat was absent so no treasurer's report was given.
Moved by Miller, seconded by Thomas that Mr. Hastings be reimbursed for building materials in
the amount of $100.78, be approved. Ayes: Eight.
Chairperson's Report
Chairperson White reported that tickets are available at HyVee for the USO Show that the
Exchange Club is sponsoring. WWII Vets will receive a free meal and there will be a dance on
Friday April, 13, 2012.
Moved by Thomas, seconded by Hastings to approve the request of Mr. Miller to allow the
Exchange Club to use the hand held microphones for the USO Show, be approved. Ayes: Eight.
Moved by Miller, seconded by Thomas to put the service flags on stands at the USO Show, be
approved. Ayes: Eight.
Committee Reports
Building, Grounds & Operations —Richard Hastings reported that someone has been feeding the
rabbits and birds corn cobs on the grounds. Internet connection is in the process and there will be
a Ship reunion in June.
With no further business before the commission, it was moved by Hockey, seconded by Thomas
that the meeting be adjourned at 5:15 p.m. Ayes: Eight.
