Veterans Memorial Hall
Members present: Chairperson Craig White, Phil Thomas, Randall Miller, Richard Hastings,
Kristine Reeves, Marcia Courbat, Don Ticknor, Michael Dennis, Sherman Lundy.
Members absent: Marilyn Robinson with Willie Smith as her replacement
Also present: Rick Hurtado, Maria Armstrong, Brian Dolan, Richard Hockey
Moved by Lundy, seconded by Hastings that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Ten.
Moved by Dennis, seconded by Courbat that the Minutes of October 26, 20101; Unofficial
Minutes of January 26, 2011; and Unofficial Minutes of February 23, 2011, as proposed, be
approved. Ayes: Ten.
Citizens Oral Comments
There was discussion regarding the new bricks on the new walkway, the cost of the bricks and
major donor bricks. There was also some discussion regarding the cost of the installation of a
new PA system and a possible fundraiser. Willie Smith stated that the City has asked about the
possibility of placing benches around the building. Rick Hurtado passed around a photo of the
benches and stated that the benches would be the same as what the City has placed throughout
the city.
Treasurer's Report
Marcia Courbat gave the April 27, 2011 Treasurer's Report. Ms. Courbat reported that the
commission has sold 2743 bricks at $50.00 each and 4 bricks at $250.00 each for a total of
$138,150.00, with a balance of $13,333.41 in the Brick Fund. There is a balance of $4,874.40 in
the General Fund and $1,296.00 in the Special fund. Moved by Miller, seconded by Hastings
that Treasurer's Report be received and placed on file. Ayes: Ten.
Chairperson's Report
Chairperson White reported there is a Honor Flight Poker Run being held on May 7, 2011 to start
at 11:00 a.m. at Lofty's located in Evansdale. Hy-Vee is also sponsoring a spaghetti dinner on
April 28, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to help support the Waterloo Honor Flight. Moved
by Miller, seconded by Hasting that Chairperson's Report be received and placed on file. Ayes:
Ten.
Committee Reports
Building, Grounds & Operations —Richard Hastings reported that MidAmerican recommended a
carbon monoxide alarm be purchased for the boiler room; Hastings recommended that a special
eraser be used in cleaning the donated cards to retain the information from them; Hastings
recommended getting the large framed civil war photos digitally photographed; Hastings stated
that he spoke to Carl Schuler to clean between bricks before the Memorial Day weekend and that
there are some spots where the mortar is coming up so he will also talk to Carl Schuler about
that; Hastings stated that he is actively looking for carpenters to make bookcases to be placed in
the upper level.
Education/Historical—Randall Miller reported that plans are coming along for the Memorial
Day ceremony. There was discussion about getting the fountain running before then. Mr. Miller
stated that on October 3, 2011 there was a reunion that should be placed on the schedule. Mr.
Miller stated that he purchased a fallen soldier statue to be used for ceremonies. He presented
the bill to the members and asked to be reimbursed the cost of the statue. Moved by Smith,
seconded by Hastings that Mr. Miller be reimbursed for payment of the statue. Ayes: Ten.
Finance/Fundraising—Marcia Courbat reported that brick payments in the amount of $180.00,
$225.00 and $350.00 be paid. Also, that she be reimbursed payment of $17.60 for postage that is
used for sending brick forms. There was some discussion regarding bricks for fallen soldiers.

Moved by Miller, seconded by Dennis that payments for bricks and reimbursement for Marcia be
made. Ayes: Ten.

New Business
Dennis asked when bricks will be installed. Courbat responded that she will call everyone when
that happens.
With no further business before the commission, it was moved by Smith, seconded by White that
the meeting be adjourned at 6:04 p.m. Ayes: Ten.
