Members absent: Anthony Tisdale, Don Ticknor, Marilyn Robinson. Also present: Maria Armstrong. Moved by Miller, seconded by Courbat that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Six. Moved by Dennis, seconded by Miller that the Minutes of August 25, 2010, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Six. Citizens Oral Comments None Treasurer's Report Marcia Courbat gave the January 16, 2011 Treasurer's Report. Ms. Courbat reported that the commission has sold 2721 bricks at $50.00 each and 4 bricks at $250.00 each for a total of $136,060.00, with a balance of $12,367.30 in the Brick Fund. There is a balance of $4,874.40 in the General Fund and $1,296.00 in the Special fund. Ms. Courbat stated that there was a deposit of $450.00 and presented an invoice in the amount of $56.00 from United States Postal Service for a post office box and a receipt in the amount of $8.80 for the purchase of postage that is used for mailings sent to inquiring individuals. There was also a request to refund Hastings for receipts in the amount of $3.11 (de-icer) and $50.98 (flag). Moved by Miller, seconded by Thomas that the invoice be paid and reimbursements be made for the receipted items and City Clerk authorized to submit for payment. Ayes: Six. Chairperson's Report Chairperson White did not have anything new to report. Committee Reports Building, Grounds & Operations —Richard Hastings reported that on January 18, 2011 there was a genealogy meeting he attended. He learned that there is a $1,000.00 grant for research that is available through the Historical Preservation that is given each month that the commission may benefit from. Mr. Hastings stated that there is a digital archival camera that can be used for books and photos. It will digitize the books and photos to be stored on a hard drive or USB port for safekeeping. It can also be used to display items without the wear and tear on them. Mr. Hastings reported that there are some freedom plaques that will be brought downstairs and repaired. There following items were discussed: getting an updated alphabetical brick list; adding Memorial Hall link to the City website; building electrical updates; placement of a motion sensor with alarm for those that are alone in the building; corrugated water humidifier to place on heaters to keep moisture in the building. Education/Historical—Randall Miller stated that there previously was a speaker from LaPorte City that spoke as a Memorial Day event. There was some discussion as to who to ask to speak at this years event. Mr. Dennis reported that the stone for M.I.A. monument will be installed inohtoo Fortte/Dokge, Iowa and the dedication ceremony is also scheduled for Memorial Day weeken Finance/Fundraising—Marcia b r ors for into gettin funding through the Black Hawk County —Gaming ere was discussion on a brick for Carl Schuler and his company. Moved by 1Gliller, seconded by Dennis that a brick be placed in honor of Carl Schuler and his company. Ayes: Six. Ms. Courbat stated that she sent a thank you card to Beverly Brumbaugh at the Waterloo Fire Station for taking care of the brick forms._ Unfinished Business There was some discussion regarding bricks and limestone that need to be cleaned by Memorial Day. Moved by Dennis, seconded by Thomas to allow Hastings to retrieve bids for cleaning the bricks New Business There was discussion regarding U.A.W. Veterans becoming members of the commission. It was noted that the alternates must be called if the delegate does not show up for the meeting. Discussion of term expiration of commission members continued and it was decided that each membvoul be mailed applications to fill out. Citizens Oral Comments Rick Hurtado, noted that the Army, Air Force, and Marine flags are still needed for out back. We have the Coast Guard and Navy. Treasurer's Report Marcia Courbat gave the October 24, 2010 Treasurer's Report. Moved by Miller, seconded by Thomas that the invoice be approved and City Clerk authorized to submit for payment. Ayes: Eight. Mr. Courbat requested to buy bricks to replace the old ones. The corners need to be lifted. Chairperson's Report Chairperson Craig White reported that he sold two bricks. November 6, 2010 there will be a 5K/10K Race and they will need to utilize the building. He has received $103,000.00 toward the honor flight. There will be volunteer training at the UAW on November 18, 2010. Mediacom will be doing a documentary on the flight that KWWL will televise. There will be a flight in April, with tentative flights in June and September. Committee Reports Education/Historical—Randall Miller reported that Veteran's Day is coming up and the program needs to be worked on. John Deere has received the application for a grant to purchase a PA system. A decision will be made on November 1st. The Civil War Roundtable was held at the hall and a representative of Allen Hospital spoke. Unfinished Business Ms. Robinson stated that Carl Schuler and Benton Concrete have placed the base for the monument. The monument will be close to done but not be ready by Memorial Day.
