Veterans Memorial Hall
Members present: Chairperson Craig White, Phil Thomas, Randall Miller, Richard Hastings,
Marcia Courbat, Michael Dennis, Jons Olsson.
Members absent: Dennis Garthoff, Anthony Tisdale, Don Ticknor, Marilyn Robinson.
Also present: Rick Hurtado, Roger Batchelver, Roosevelt Taylor, Maria Armstrong.
Moved by White, seconded by Miller that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Seven.
Absent: Garthoff, Tisdale, Ticknor, Robinson.
Moved by Miller, seconded by Courbat that the Minutes of September 23, 2009, as proposed, be
approved. Ayes: Seven. Absent: Garthoff, Tisdale, Ticknor, Robinson.
Citizens Oral Comments
Rick Hurtado reported that the Rally for our Vets event held on October 11, 2009 at Veteran's
Memorial Hall from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. went well. The event included a Car and
Motorcycle Show and tours of Memorial Hall at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The event raised
money through the sale oft -shirts made by Nagle Signs.
Mr. Hurtado reported that there will be an event held on November 11, 2009 honoring Veteran's
at the hall. The event will include cookies, hot cocoa and hot cider. The hall will be open for
rededication at 11:00 a.m. with the lighting of the Veteran's Memorial Hall sign at 6:00 p.m.
Randall Miller noted it was still being decided as to who was going to flip the switch. Marcia
Courbat noted that she contacted Friendship Village about bringing residents to the event.
Treasurer's Report
Marcia Courbat gave the October Treasurer's Report. Ms. Courbat reported that the commission
has sold 2,670 bricks at $50.00 each and 4 bricks at $250.00 each for a total of $134,500.00, with
a balance of $11,603.00 in the Brick Fund. There is a balance of $4,697.40 in the General Fund
and $796.00 in the Special fund.
Ms. Courbat presented a grant check from the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation in
the amount of $250.00 will be added to the Memorial Hall fund.
Chairperson's Report
Chairperson White reminded all members of the event in November and to get the word out.
Chairperson White noted that a company representative would be arriving shortly to program
each Commission member's code to the building.
Committee Reports
Building, Grounds & Operations —Richard Hastings reported that there is now a answering
machine at the Memorial Hall that was donated by a resident from Friendship Village. Mr.
Hastings stated that a thank you letter was sent to the donor of the display case. Mr. Hastings
reported that after a walk through of the building there are several issues throughout the building
that he will contact Louis Cutwright, City Building Official/Maintenance Administrator about.
Mr. Miller now absent at 5:30 p.m.
It was moved by White, seconded by Courbat that the meeting be adjourned at 5:30 p.m. due to
lack of quorum. Ayes: Six. Absent: Dennis Garthoff, Anthony Tisdale, Don Ticknor, Marilyn
Robinson, Randall Miller.
