Head Signature: # of Attachments: SUBJECT: Request to hire a Chief of Fire Services Submitted by: Director of Safety Services, Dan Trelka Recommended City Council Action: Summary Statement This position is an Assistant Director of Safety Services/Fire. The top priorities for the person in this position will be to ensure employees of the Fire Rescue Department are effectively trained and to also manage the day-to-day operations of the Fire Rescue Department. Said Assistant Director is also a "fire chief' for purposes of Iowa Code 400.13 and any other Iowa Code provisions assigning duties exclusively to a "fire chief." Expenditure Required Source of Funds: 010-210.12-1400-1111 (Fire Salaries) Policy Issue Alternative Background Information: This position is a reorganization of the duties and responsibilities of senior management positions within the police and fire rescue department as per the recently enacted City of Waterloo Ordinance Title 1 (Administration); Chapter 6 (Municipal Departments); Article F (Department of Safety Services). He has demonstrated proven ability in key areas of responsibility including plan review, permit writing, inspections, and maintenance of city facilities. Moved by Hart, seconded by Cole that Request from Director of Safety Services Trelka for authorization to begin the promotional Civil Service process for Captain of Police Services and make an appointment, be approved. Ayes: Three. Motion carried. Moved by Cole, seconded by Hart that Request from Mayor Clark for authorization to make an appointment to the position of Building Official/Maintenance Administrator, be approved. Ayes: Three.
