SUBJECT: Request to hire a Chief of Fire Services

Recommended City Council Action:
Summary Statement
This position is an Assistant Director of Safety Services/Fire. The top priorities for the person in
this position will be to ensure employees of the Fire Rescue Department are effectively trained
and to also manage the day-to-day operations of the Fire Rescue Department. Said Assistant
Director is also a "fire chief' for purposes of Iowa Code 400.13 and any other Iowa Code
provisions assigning duties exclusively to a "fire chief."

This position is a reorganization of the duties and responsibilities of senior management
positions within the police and fire rescue department as per the recently enacted City of

(Department of Safety Services).

Summary Statement: This new position, Captain of Police Services, was developed as a
result of the restructuring of the police and fire departments. The Captain of Police
Services would answer directly to the Director of Safety Services

Summary Statement: Craig Clark has been acting director of the Building Department
since November 29, 2010. He has demonstrated proven ability in key areas of
responsibility including plan review, permit writing, inspections, and maintenance of city
facilities.
