I'm requesting council approval of a Professional Services Agreement with Modus to evaluate making bid specifications and design of a new sound system. There are different parts of the existing system that we are hoping to reuse, specifically the amps and some speakers. BACKGROUND INFORMATION Mid States Audio, Inc. of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, replaced the sound system during the 2002 remodel of the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center at a cost of $126,000.00. On March 14, 2005, the Building and Grounds committee approved and signed a sound system maintenance agreement for the amount of $4,860.00. It was in place for only one year. Over the past year we have paid $3,279.53 for work done on the system. There have been service calls by different contractors over the past ten years in the amount of $2,300.00. To clear up any confusion, the work done by Maximum Sight & Sound in 2010 (in the amount of $83,489.99), was for new wide screen and projector which is used for presentation. It was in no way related to the current sound system. Over the past ten years, we have put very little money into the sound system, although we have heard our fair share of complaints about the system. In fact, it is the number one complaint regarding the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center from large events. After doing some research on a system of this size, I have found the life expectancy of controls to be 8-10 years and speakers and amps to be 12-15 years. The controls and operating systems are technology -based and are similar to computer and cell phone technology - as soon as you buy it, they come out with something new and better. I realize that this is a big investment, but it is needed to ensure the future use of the Sullivan Brothers Convention Center. CITY WEBSITE: www.cityofwaterlooiowa.com WE'RE WORKING FOR YOU'.
