BUILDING & GROUNDS COMMITTEE February 21, 2011 4:50 p.m. Council Chambers Members present: Welper, Greenwood. Absent: Getty. Moved by Greenwood, seconded by Welper that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Two. Motion carried. Moved by Greenwood, seconded by Welper that lease of 144 square feet of cold storage to Chris Mincks of Cedar Valley Automatic Fire Sprinklers LLC at a rate of $50.00 per month for the purpose of storing equipment related to his business —Submitted by Noel Anderson, Community Planning & Development Director, be authorized. Ayes: Two. Motion carried. Noel Anderson, Community Planning & Development Director stated this is just a portion of one of the Black Hawk Sprinkler buildings. It's actually a small section that's kind of easily accessible without going through any of the other parts. It's got its own garage door and everything so it's a nice little spot that we can rent out. As this gentleman was looking for some space when he was in there. Chris Western showed him this space and it looks like it will work out. It is unheated space as well so there shouldn't be any cost to the city. Councilperson Welper stated it's not very big. Mr. Anderson stated no. Councilperson Greenwood asked if this is sort of a month -to -month type of deal. Mr. Anderson stated that it is set up as a month -to -month lease. With no further business before the Council, it was moved by Welper, seconded by Greenwood that the meeting be adjourned at 4:53 p.m. Ayes: Two. Motion carried. Submitted by: Noel Anderson i r, Recommended Building and Ground Action: To make recommendation to City Council to approve proposed lease. Summary Statement: Staff has received a request to lease approximately 144 square feet of cold storage space from Chris Mink of Cedar Valley Sprinklers for the purpose of storing equipment related to his business. Mr. Minks has offered to rent the space for $50 a month, which is approximately .34 cents per square foot. Staff made several calls to local "Mini"- Storage facilities and the average cost is .60 cents per square foot. However, Cedar Valley Sprinklers is a new business and is growing very well at this time. Mr. Mincks would like to build or buy a building in the Waterloo area in the future but would like to lease at this time. The average electric bill for this portion of the building is $20 per month during the summer and $150 during the winter. Expenditure Required N/A Source of Funds N/A Policy issue N/A Alternative: Leave vacant Background Information: As a part of the East River Front Housing project, the city acquired the building that once housed Black Hawk Sprinkler located at 1100-1106 Sycamore Street, as shown on the enclosed aerial photograph.
