TechWorks Update
April 24, 2013
Tech I
• TW is partnering with Iowa Innovation Corporation to convert several floors of the Tech 1 building to
be the Advanced Manufacturing Center of Excellence. This project would use federal dollars applied for
through the National Network of Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) program and/or the Investing in
Manufacturing Communities Partnership — both funds would be appropriate for this effort. Funding
request has also been presented to state for remaining stimulus dollars to be invested in infrastructure
improvements to Tech 1 in preparation/partnership for proposed federal project. TechWorks is included
in the Senate budget — waiting for House approval.
• The Tech I building will house the Sustainable Construction program for Hawkeye Community College
located on the 1Yt floor. Lease discussion in process.
• Tech Shop concept was introduced to the community on March 29th by Dan Woods from San Jose, CA.
who is surveying the possibility of locating a Tech Shop facility at TechWorks. The project idea was
brought to the area by the McElroy Foundation Board of Trustees. Next steps will be to determine
viability and sustainability if a similar business were located in the Cedar Valley.
The Green — Tech II project
• Two pieces of project that need to be completed before site improvements and renovation of Tech II
can begin:
o Federal Historic Tax Credits secured (application in consideration with review hearing scheduled
for June 14)
o Transfer of property north of the A building (museum) from TW back to Deere-- should be
completed by the end of May for site improvements to begin
• Delay in construction due to assembly of final piece of the financial package —Historic Tax Credits
(above). Remaining components are ready to go:
o New Market Tax Credits
o Renewable energy tax credits
o City bonds/TIF supported by developmental agreement
o Conventional lending terms and partnership
• When construction begins on Tech II, build out for Hawkeye Community College's Alternative Energy
program on 2nd floor and Deere training center on 5th floor will begin.
• The Green/FDP has secured hotel and restaurant operator — both national chain organizations
Renewable Energy Project
• The renewable energy system that will provide power to Tech 11 will include three sources — business
partners have been secured:
o Solar (photo voltaic) canopies in parking lots — iPower, Inc.
o Small wind turbines on the ground that will provide light and signage opportunities — Urban
Green Energy, Inc.
o Fuel cell production — located inside on the 2nd floor to provide educational opportunities for
HCC students — United Technologies Company
