Economic Development Services & Prospects
Fiscal Year Beginning July 1, 2013 Results Through May 1, 2014
• 20 new opportunities delivered from July 2013 through April 30, 2014; goal for the
2013/2014 fiscal year is 20. Average capital investment is $8.14 million; goal $5 million
average. Total capital investment $182.8 million. Total new & retained jobs identified
757.
- 15 were generated through GCVAC & Regional Marketing Initiatives, Direct
Leads and through GCVAC's Existing Business Visitation Program;
- 3 opportunities were referrals from the Iowa Economic Development;
- 2 referral from the cities.
External Marketing Initiatives from January 2014:
• Through April 2014— Lead Generation Initiative: Selected Targeted Industries—
Advanced Manufacturing (Supply Chain & Food Equipment Mfg.), End-User Data
Centers. Identified 9 project from initiative; goal was 6 leads from a database of 800
companies.
Business Connect- Existing Business Initiatives from January 2014
• Advance Cedar Valley: An Economic Gardening Program—As of May 1, 2014, 5
businesses have participated with 2 still in process. Each client takes part in a 3 week
program with UNI and a multi-stage follow-up with GCVAC. This is a multi-year
commitment between GCVAC and each company to help with business growth.
• Skilled Iowa Program - NCRC testing,job profiling, employment data and other benefits
offered to employers who have signed the Skilled Iowa pledge. Since inception, 401
Cedar Valley employers have signed up as of May 1, 2014.
• 2014 Cedar Valley International Trade Seminar Series— February 28 &April 30, 2014 -
The Alliance & Chamber offered 2 in a series of 4 export seminars for existing regional
businesses seeking to start or expand sales internationally. Companies from Janesville,
Waverly, Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Reinbeck, Cedar Rapids Marion and North Liberty have
attended. The first session focused on the dos & don'ts with responding to trade lead
and detailed information on international pro forma invoice (quotations) and
preparation. The second session focused on "INCO Terms, Harmonized Systems
Production Classification and Payment Methods" both were held at VGM's
Headquarters.
• Cedar Valley Manufacturer's Conference— February 5, 2014 at Tama Hall, Hawkeye
Community College Campus. GCVAC cosponsoring this event with HCC. A total of 58
people attending this event focused on Global Marketplace Success. Twenty-six
individuals later attended a demonstration of the ExOne 3D Printer located at the Cedar
Valley TechWorks.
Talent Connect—Workforce Development Initiatives
• Job Fairs -GCVAC had an exhibitor presence at the below job fairs in February. Several
Cedar Valley businesses also exhibited; GCVAC staff had the company information on
hand to distribute but also redirected interested students to these businesses booths.
One company identified 9-10 student referrals to their company's booth from GCVAC's
booth. Resumes collected will be shared with regional employers as the skills apply to
open positions and intern opportunities.

Tech Works Campus
• West campus site work construction started late Spring 2014 on area around the Deere
museum and the Tech I building;
• Iowa Advanced Manufacturing Center work group established with ongoing industry
task force meetings to assess critical needs and resources of Iowa's manufacturers;
• January 6, 2014 hire of TechWorks facilities director and IAMC operations director—
Wes James;
• Completed transition of phasing out UNI NABL lab and launching UNI Metal Casting
Center additive manufacturing operations at TechWorks;
• UNI MCC now helping more than 20 companies grow their business using the nation's
largest 3-D printer;
• May 2014— beginning construction of capital improvements to floors 1 & 2 in Tech I
building in preparation of the Iowa Advanced Manufacturing Center— project funded by
2013 legislative appropriation;
• City application to the Iowa Economic Development Authority for the creation of the
Waterloo Reinvestment District (TechWorks campus)— under review with final
determination in June 2014. WRD to create $12M investment over 20 years to projects
in the 25 acre district;
• Financial District Properties is reassembling their financial and business partners for
implementation of The Green project with construction slated to begin Fall of 2014.
