Members present: Craig White in the Chair, Rodney Butz, Don Ticknor, Mel Wittwer, Marilyn
Robinson, Mike Mrzlak, Jim Lentfer and John Mrzlak(A).
Absent: Randy Miller, Scott McDonald, Marcia Courbat, Frank McCaw, and Angela Hickok

Moved by D. Ticknor, seconded by J. Mrzlak, that the Agenda be approved. Ayes: Eight.
Motion carried.
Moved by J., Mrzlak, seconded by M. Wittwer, that the Minutes of January 22, 2020, as
presented, be approved. Ayes: Eight. Motion carried.
Citizen's Oral Comments
None.
Treasurer's Report
Marcia Courbat was absent. Nancy Higby read the current fund balances as $7,229.94 in the
Brick Fund and $486.28 in the Flag Fund.
Chairperson's Report
Craig White commented that volunteers are needed to help assemble flags for the Field of Honor
event scheduled for May 1-3, 2020, with a ceremony to be held on the 2nd honoring over 600
people from Black Hawk County killed in action from the Civil War to present day. Guards are
needed to watch over the flags on the 2nd and 3rd. Flags may be purchased for $40. Let Craig
White or Frank Magsaman know if you're interested.
Craig gave an update on the remaining Honor Flights, and explained that a fundraiser will be
held on April 18d'.
Committee Reports
Building, Grounds & Operations—Chairperson Mel Wittwer
Mel Wittwer reported that he has secured a place to store the pledge cards mentioned at last
month's meeting. He shared several items of interest that were located and requested the
commission make a determination on whether to keep them or offer them to other organizations.
Craig White suggested he would do some checking at the VFW to see if they might have a use
for the Vietnam items.
Craig acknowledged the hard work and progress both Mel Wittwer and Jim Lentfer have made.
Education/Historical—Chairperson Randall Miller
None. Randy Miller was absent.
Finance/Fundraising—Chairperson Marcia Courbat
None. Marcia Courbat was absent.
Artifacts Preservation— Chairperson James Lentfer
Jim Lentfer reported that a desktop computer has been acquired but a router will need to be
purchased to make it fully functional. He mentioned that once up and running, he would prefer
to maintain any information on the hard drive and not in the cloud. He also mentioned he would

like to have a city email address for Memorial Hall and a phone line with a message tree, if
possible. Nancy Higby suggested he speak with Chris Youngblut, MIS Director, at the City of
Waterloo.
Jim Lentfer discussed the benefits of digitizing information and suggested forming a
subcommittee, and if approved, he would speak with Angela Hickok about participating.
Moved by Jim Lentfer, seconded by Rodney Butz, to form a subcommittee chaired by Rodney
Butz, to manage the project.
Jim briefly discussed the progress that has been made in the labeling of cabinets. It was also
noted that all cabinets have been rekeyed to one master key.
Unfinished Business
There are honor guard rifles to be transferred out of the commissions care. A discussion took
place regarding the process to do so.
New Business
Jim Lentfer commented on a broken brick on the grounds, it is believed that the brick was
damaged by city workers.
Jim suggested having an open house to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of V-E Day, similar to
what was been done for the 100th WWI Anniversary.
John Mrzlak proposed honoring Marcia Courbat for all of her years of service and dedication. A
discussion followed, and it was moved by J. Mrzlak, seconded by M. Robinson, to have a plaque
card made in her honor and mounted within Memorial Hall. Ayes: Eight. Motion carried.
With no further business before the commission, it was moved by M. Mrzlak, seconded by D.
Ticknor, that the meeting be adjourned at 5:46p.m. Ayes: Eight. Motion carried.
