HomeMy WebLinkAbout2010 Annual Report November 24, 2010
• Waterloo City Council Members
- Mayor Clark
- Dear Council and Mayor,
X
LL
= I am enclosing the annual report of the Waterloo Public Library for Fiscal
- Year 2010. The report contains statistics measuring use of library
resources, including materials, staff time, and the building itself.
P
What it does not tell you are some of the anecdotes regarding library
• use. A recent report by the Chicago-based Urban Libraries Council found
that in addition to the well-known library services such as providing
▪ books, reference help and story time, libraries help enrich their
WAIL R LOO = communities by:
PJ3LiC
• Providing literacy programs for all ages. In Waterloo, we provide
L I B R A R Y
Books for Babies, a free book and library packet to babies
before they even leave the hospital. In some of our local
families,we have heard it is the first book in their home. We
have story time, book discussions for all ages, and countless
hours of staff assistance in learning how to use resources of any
o format. Reading to children does influence learning for the rest
0
of their lives, which in turn enhances our community.
3 • Connecting unemployed or underemployed residents with
employment opportunities and skill development programs. At
WPL, we provide The Learning Center, a one-on-one learning
venue twice a week. One homeless patron who began by asking
for help in creating a resume and applying for jobs online
recently reported back that she is now employed, and seeking a
2 more permanent place to live.
2
° • Supporting small businesses. Library patrons do everything from
seek assistance in starting up their business to using library
computers to run it. We are invested in helping community
members improve our economy.
• Inspiring and improving downtown and neighborhood
development. The Library recently received grants to help
achieve a major technology upgrade. The Friends of the Library
run a used book store, generating funds for the library. Over
one quarter of a million patrons come downtown to use our
library, taking part in story hours, book discussions, Learning
Center, public computer use, checking out nearly one half
million books, movies and CDs.
• Providing services for vulnerable people: the freshly
unemployed, immigrants and "at-risk youth."The Library's teen
center is always busy with local young stopping by after school,
providing a safe place to use the computer, do homework,
LL
attend programs and just hang out. Snacks provided by the
Friends are sometimes their only evening meal. Latino patrons
not familiar with our language and community visit our
language collection, and can receive help from staff members
a fluent in their language. The Library is in partnership with Iowa
Workforce Development to assist all job seekers.
'W
Thank you for your support of the Library. Our staff is very passionate
WATER LOO = about providing library services to everyone in our community, and
PJ3 L i C would welcome the opportunity to show you how we do that anytime
LIBR AR V you would like to stop by.
Sincerely,
o Ji ceoyUZi
