HomeMy WebLinkAbout1/27/2021 MEMORIAL HALL COMMISSION January 27, 2021 5:00 p.m. Veterans Memorial Hall Members present: Craig White in the Chair, Scott McDonald, Don Ticknor, Mel Wittwer, James Lentfer. Absent: Randy Miller, Rodney Butz, Marilyn Robinson, Frank McCaw, Mike Mrzlak, John Mrzlak(A) and Angela Hickok(A). Also in Attendance: Mike Hudson — American Legion 4138, Matt Carpenter — Sons of the American Legion, and Richard Hurtado, and Nancy Higby, Secretary- City of Waterloo. Moved by McDonald, seconded by Lentfer, that the Agenda be approved. Ayes: Five. Motion carried. Moved by Wittwer, seconded by Lentfer,that the Minutes of December 9, 2020, as presented, be approved. Ayes: Five. Motion carried. i Citizen's Oral Comments Mike Hudson introduced himself and commented that he would like to learn more about what the commission does and stated that he might be interested in joining. Treasurer's Report—Vacant Craig White read the fund balances as of January 20, 2021, reporting a brick fund balance of $7,099.84 and flag fund of$5.85. Jim Lentfer asked when the flag fund would be replenished, and stated that there are two boxes of cemetery flags currently on hand,but three more will need to be purchased. Chairperson's Report Craig White commented on the passing of Marcia Courbat and that her steadfast commitment and efforts will be missed. A discussion followed regarding the need to continue the work she did so well, including combing through the obituaries. Craig will look into getting death records from the Courier sent to Memorial Hall. Committee Reports Building, Grounds & Operations—Chairperson Mel Wittwer Mel reported that one brick was purchased for$50 and turned the check over to Nancy Higby to be received into the brick fund. He commented that there appears to be some wall paint chipping near the top of the stairs and he has contacted Ed at the city to come look at it. Education/Historical—Chairperson Randall Miller No report. Randy was absent. Finance/Fundraising—Vacant Artifacts Preservation—Chairperson James Lentfer Jim Lentfer stated that efforts continue to digitize artifacts and commented that WiFi is needed in the office to really be operational at Memorial Hall. He said that with Mike Rooff(Waterloo IT Department) retiring and the convention center taking up much of IT's availability, there hasn't been any progress. January 27, 2021 Page 2 He explained that there are several items he would like the commission members to help make a decision on as whether to donate to the Grout or dispose of. Some are true artifacts, others are not. Craig White suggested he lay them out on a side table at the next scheduled commission meeting so a decision can be made. A discussion took place on what to do with the many gravestone markers and posts currently being stored at Memorial Hall. It was determined that Jim would check with the funeral homes and cemeteries to see if they would be interested and have a need for them. Unfinished Business— Mel Wittwer made the following motions under Article III, Section 1, subsection(a): 1. Primary and alternate members of commissioner's status shall be authorized to be, member, sons or auxiliary (clarifying Article IV Section 1, paragraph (a); eligible representatives and Article V, Section 1 of the bylaws), seconded by Lentfer. Ayes: Five. Motion carried. 2. Reinstate the Sons of the Union Veterans Civil War at large, seconded by Lentfer. Ayes: Five. Motion carried. 3. Add AMVETS at large, seconded by Lentfer. Ayes: Five. Motion carried. 4. Add Black Hawk County Board of Veterans Affairs. Motion failed due to lack of a second. New Business The topic of placing a plaque within Memorial Hall to honor Marcia Courbat, previously approved on February 26, 2020, was brought back to the table. Moved by White, seconded by Lentfer,to authorize the purchase of a plaque, in an amount not to exceed$50. With no further business before the commission, it was moved by McDonald, seconded by Ticknor,that the meeting be adjourned at 5:48 p.m. Ayes: Five. Motion carried.
