HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005-162-02.21.2005 This Resolution prepared by Nancy Eckert, City Clerk, 715 Mulberry Street, Waterloo, Iowa. RESOLUTION NO. 2005-162 RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE CHARACTER COUNTS ! PROGRAM IN THE CITY OF WATERLOO, IOWA. WHEREAS, a complete education encompasses more than academic skills, and WHEREAS, while the Waterloo Schools have always promoted positive character traits and responsible citizenship, ten schools have adopted a comprehensive framework for character education-- Character Counts ! , and WHEREAS, Character Counts ! is underway in the Waterloo Schools with teams from Central and Logan Middle Schools; and Black Hawk, Jewett, Kingsley, Kittrell, Lincoln, Lowell, Orange and Cunningham School for Excellence Elementary Schools, and WHEREAS, Character Counts ! is based on the following beliefs : • There are enduring, universal moral truths, which distinguish right from wrong and define the essence of good character. • Character really counts--who you are makes a difference. • Character is not hereditary--it must be consciously developed by example and demand. and WHEREAS, in partnership with the Waterloo Community School District, the Waterloo Downtown and Crossroads Rotary Clubs, the Community Foundation of Waterloo and Cedar Falls, the R. J. McElroy Trust, Covenant Health System, and Allen Health System will teach, enforce, advocate and model the following six pillars of character to our youth: • Trustworthiness • Respect • Responsibility • Fairness • Caring • Citizenship NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WATERLOO, IOWA, to fully support the Character Counts ! program which encourages and promotes a community-wide character education program for the youth in Waterloo and to urge the citizens of Waterloo to become aware of the importance of community-wide character education and show support for positive character development of the youth in our community.
