RESOLUTION NO. 1999-67:3
RESOLUTION DECLARING THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 27,
1999 AS THE MAYOR' S OLYMPIKIDS FOR FITNESS WEEK IN
THE CITY OF WATERLOO, IOWA.
WHEREAS, the Mayor' s OlympiKids for Fitness program is about
kids being active and developing life-long health and fitness
habits, and
WHEREAS, this program was conceived by the Honorable Deedee
Corradini, Mayor of Salt Lake City, site of the 2002 Olympic
Winter Games, and
WHEREAS, the City of Waterloo joins Mayor Corradini in her
belief that health and fitness of our nation' s youth is the
highest priority for cities and towns, and
WHEREAS, almost 50 percent of our school age children are not
engaged in regular vigorous physical activity of any kind, and
WHEREAS, significant numbers of children are starting school
who are physically obese with elevated blood pressure and other
ailments that can be attributed to lack of regular physical
activity.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF WATERLOO, IOWA that :
1 . The City of Waterloo endorses and supports the year-long
Mayor' s OlympiKids for Fitness Program in all public and
parochial schools in Waterloo for all 4th and 5th graders.
2 . The City of Waterloo participates in and supports the
kick-off of this yearlong program scheduled for Thursday,
September 30, beginning at 10 : 00 a.m. at Lincoln Park.
3 . The City of Waterloo encourages the entire community to
join us in this celebration which includes a one-mile fun
run.
4 . The City of Waterloo does and the same hereby declares
the week of September 27, 1999 as the Mayor' s OlympiKids
for Fitness Week in the City of Waterloo, Iowa.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 27th day of September, 1999 .
