HomeMy WebLinkAbout04.06.2009• COUNCIL WORK SESSION April 6, 2009 4:40 p.m. Council Chambers The meeting was called to order at 4:53 p.m. Members present: Mayor Hurley, Cole, Getty, Hart, Greenwood, Steve Schmitt, Welper, Reggie Schmitt. Moved by Reggie Schmitt, seconded by Steve Schmitt that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Seven. Motion carried. The purpose of the work session was to discuss proposed changes to the dangerous animal control ordinance. Petco contacted the city earlier this week concerned that they could not sell snakes in their store because the city's ordinance states "all venomous and constricting snakes" are considered dangerous animals prohibiting them in the city limits. Maria Tiller, Code Enforcement Officer, noted that all snakes are actually constricting, and that the ordinance needs to be modified in order for Petco, PetSmart and Emporium Pets to be able to continue to sell snakes. The museum has some snakes on display and should be part of the exemptions along with religious exemption of snakes. The proposed change will allow an exception for corn snake, king snake, garter snake, ribbon snake, rat snake, milk snake, rosy boa and ball python of less than six feet. In addition the wording "subject to the zoning ordinance" needs to be added to the ordinance in the section allowing farm animals such as cows, pigs, horses, poultry, ostriches, emus, goats and sheep to be kept in the city limits. The proposed changes will be forwarded to Chris Wendland and brought back to the ordinance committee. With no further business before the committee, it was moved by Cole, seconded by Greenwood that the meeting be adjourned at 5:00 p.m. Ayes: Seven. Motion carried. Nancy Eckert City Clerk
