Mayor Hurley reviewed items on the Standing Committee agendas for meetings scheduled for Monday, August 10, 2009. Greenwood now present at 8:03 a.m. Mayor Hurley noted that a work session is scheduled to discuss operations and maintenance of the recycling sites and the yard waste drop-off operations and regulations. Mayor Hurley noted that his office and Waste Management Services receives many complaints on the recycling sites, and the latest complaints are for the Eveland Jordan site on West 5th Street and the former Chamberlain site. The discuss will center on what to do to curb abuse, and should the city use more signage and cameras to lower the abuse. Mayor Hurley explained that after the windstorm the city opened up the yard waste drop-off site and removed the size limitation and the discussion will be should we reinstate the size limitation and we will also talk about the new chipper. Mayor Hurley reviewed items on the council agenda for Monday, August 10, 2009 and the following items were discussed. Councilperson Welper reported that Doug Miller from the National Cattle Congress called him regarding his request for discretionary hotel/motel funds that were denied by council on August 3, 2009. Mr. Miller is asking what can he do to get his requests for funding approved as they also have been denied funding four times by the Black Hawk County Gaming Association. Councilperson Welper stated that the reason the Cattle Congress wanted to change the use of the funds was because he requested $42,000 for the signage and the city approved $2,400. Councilperson Cole stated the Cattle Congress requests for $2,400 to purchase eight handheld ID readers is a great idea, but they need to follow the process and reapply. Councilperson Hart noted that the council does not have a formal application for the discretionary hotel/motel tax funds and asked if it was time to put a process together. Mayor Hurley stated that at this time discretionary hotel/motel tax requests are sent to his office and he forwards them to council along with his recommendation. The process is very loose and informal. The council could put together a process and form working with staff. With no further business before the council, it was moved by Cole, seconded by Hart that the meeting be adjourned at 8:22 a.m. Ayes: Seven. Motion carried. Nancy Eckert City Clerk
