Mayor Hurley will put copies of all the applications in the council's mailboxes. Councilperson Greenwood asked if the council could increase the 7 percent hotel/motel tax and was advised that the tax is regulated by state law. The city has a little discretion on the use of the funds, but must follow the state regulations. Councilperson Getty expressed concern that not many of the applicants would bring in overnight stays. Councilperson Welper stated he feels the Convention & Visitors Bureau process to recommend award of grants deals with heads on beds, but the council's discretionary funds are to be used to help those events that do not qualify for the grants. Councilperson Cole expressed concern that the cost of $18,000.00 for the Waterloo Anew brochure was too high. Councilperson Cole suggested that $11,000.00 be awarded for the brochure and she felt even that would be too expensive. Mayor Hurley noted that 10 percent of the revenue from the hotel/motel tax is for the council to use for discretionary purposes, and the more hotel/motel stays the more revenue is allocated for discretionary use. With no further business before the council, it was moved by Welper, seconded by Steve Schmitt that the meeting be adjourned at 5:05 p.m. Ayes: Seven. Motion carried. Nancy Eckert City Clerk
