Members absent: Getty. The purpose of the work session was to review the Fire Department's equipment and give an update on Platform 311 and Quint 308. Ned DeBerg, Fire Chief, explained that the Fire Department has some of the trucks parked in City Hall's back parking lot. Chief DeBerg stated the purpose of this meeting is to show some of the trucks, their condition and explain how the Fire Department plans for purchase of vehicles. The council adjourned the meeting to City Hall's back parking lot at 5:04 p.m. Chief DeBerg updated the council on Aerial 311. The 1986 Pierce 105 foot aerial platform is currently at Weyauwega, Wisconsin undergoing torque box and truck body rebuild and remount. The main problem is corrosion. Chief DeBerg reported that additional problems were discovered in Aerial 311 and the Fire Department will have to make a decision if they want to rebuild or purchase a new one. Engine 301 is a 2006 Pierce rescue pumper currently under construction in Appleton, Wisconsin with completion in mid -August. This will allow the city to provide a quicker rescue response to expanding southwest Waterloo. The current 2001 Pierce rescue pumper will be moved to Station 6. Engine 306, a 1987 Pierce triple combination pumper, will become the city's first reserve truck when the 2006 Pierce rescue pumper is delivered. This truck was refurbished in 1990 and has 5 to 7 years of life as a reserve unit and will replace Engine 310. Engine 310, a 1978 American LaFrance triple combination pumper, will be retired to the Regional Training Center to be used as a portable pumping unit. Engine 305, a 1992 Pierce triple combination pumper, is scheduled to be replaced by April 2007. At that time, it will become Fire Rescue's primary reserve truck replacing Engine 302. Replacement cost is approximately $365,000.00. Engine 302 is a 1980 American LaFrance triple combination pumper. In 1995, due to the condition of the chassis and tele squirt device, the aerial was removed and sold. Proceeds from that sale paid for an in-house refurbishment that was completed in 1996. This truck will be a reserve unit until the 2007 Engine 305 arrives. At that time, it will be moved to the Regional Training Center. Quint 308, a 1995 Pierce 75' medium duty ladder that is scheduled for replacement in 2009. It is in need of chassis refurbishment which is mainly due from corrosion of the frame and frame liner, as well as touch up of ladder corrosion to prevent further damage. This repair will cost approximately $54,000.00, plus a UL inspection. This should allow the apparatus to remain front line operational until 2009 and in reserve for an additional 5 years. Replacement cost of this truck would be $750,000.00 at this time. Chief DeBerg stated that due to the discovery of further erosion of Aerial 311, the Fire Department will need to re-examine their plans for replacement of the equipment. At 5:23 p.m. the council adjourned to the Council Chambers. With no further business before the council, it was moved by Cole, seconded by Welper that the meeting be adjourned at 5:24 p.m. Ayes: Six. Absent: Getty. Motion carried. Nancy Eckert City Clerk
