Members absent: Gunderson. Moved by Welper, seconded by Kincaid that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Six. Absent: Gunderson. Motion carried. Members of the Waterloo Community Playhouse and Black Hawk Children's Theatre gave an update to the council. Members present were Geoff Grimes, Jim Waterbury Joann Hawkins and Kristin Teig Torres. The Playhouse is going to enter its 90th season in July 2006. Founded in 1916 the Playhouse had its first home in a remodeled Methodist Church on the corner of 5th and Jefferson Streets. In 1976 the Playhouse gave a financial pledge to the new wing of the Waterloo Recreation and Arts Center, which included a rehearsal room, staff offices, an expanded scene shop and renovation of the Hope Martin Theatre. In 1982 the Waterloo Community Playhouse merged with the Black Hawk Children's Theatre. Approximately 30,000 attend Black Hawk Children's Theatre productions each year. The Playhouse leases theater space for $10,000.00 per year from the Cultural & Arts Commission. The Playhouse relocated its costume shop to the Walker Building when the original site was needed for the Waterloo Industries corporate headquarters. The Waterloo Community Playhouse/Black Hawk Children's Theatre raised $520,000.00 last year for operations, with $277,000.00 coming from tickets and the rest from fundraising, costume rentals and other activities. The Waterloo Community Playhouse/Black Hawk Children's Theatre sent a letter to Mayor Hurley requesting $25,000.00 from the city to help with operations and members at the meeting asked the council for its support. With no further business before the council, it was moved by Welper, seconded by Kincaid that the meeting be adjourned at 5:17 p.m. Ayes: Six. Absent: Gunderson. Motion carried.
