HomeMy WebLinkAbout02.26.2004 (2)• COUNCIL WORK SESSION February 26, 2004 8:15 a.m. Council Chambers Mayor Hurley called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. Members present: Kincaid, Clark, Schmitt, Gunderson, Welper, Greenwood. Members absent: Cole. Moved by Clark, seconded by Welper that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Five. Absent: Cole, Greenwood. Motion carried. The purpose of the work session was to review appointment of members to the Leisure Services Commission. Mayor Hurley and the Boards and Commissions Committee have been reviewing the process of updating appointment of members to the Boards and Commissions. After the budget process is complete, Mayor Hurley will work on the appointments. The new Leisure Services Commission ordinance was adopted on Monday night. The ordinance reduced the members on the commission from nine to seven, and there was procedural language clarification. Mayor Hurley stated that there has been more interest on appointment to the Leisure Services Commission than any other board or commission. Mayor Hurley stated that he was looking for new volunteers and diversity for the appointments. Mr. Cunningham served on an Ad Hoc for Leisure Services. Mark Weidner resigned. Councilperson Gunderson noted that there were a lot of applications for the Leisure Services Commission, and this is a good selection. Councilperson Schmitt expressed concern with the appointment of Dave Buck as he was chairman of the Election Committee for Mayor Hurley. Councilperson Schmitt agreed with the appointment of Mr. Cunningham. Mayor Hurley stated he could speak positive about all the applicants. Mayor Hurley stated that Mr. Buck's application came from Mr. Huting, and he looked at Mr. Buck's experience serving on other boards and commissions and his role as a former council member. Mr. Huting stated that he served on the Cedar Valley Lakes Trail with Mr. Buck, and Mr. Buck has a sincere interest in outdoor recreation. Councilperson Welper commented that with so many boards and commissions to fill, it could be hard to find applicants that don't have ties to the council or mayor, and we could run out of applicants. Councilperson Clark agreed with Councilperson Welper. Councilperson Greenwood now present at 8:39 a.m. Council reviewed the following appointments to the Leisure Services Commission: John Delorbe, Aundra Meeks and Dave Buck, with term expiration of March 1, 2005 Kim Lozier and Jim Berry, with term expiration of March 1, 2006 Joe Fox and Edgar Cunningham, with term expiration of March 1, 2007 Mayor Hurley stated that the role of the Boards and Commissions Committee will be to help solicit and invite candidates, review ordinances and forward possible names to him. Mayor Hurley will forward his recommendation of appointment to the full council. With no further business before the council, it was moved by Welper, seconded by Clark that the meeting be adjourned at 8:44 a.m. Ayes: Six. Absent: Cole. Motion carried. Nancy Eckert City Clerk
