HomeMy WebLinkAbout06.14.2004COUNCIL WORK SESSION June 14, 2004 4:50 p.m. Council Chambers Members present: Mayor Hurley, Kincaid, Cole, Greenwood, Clark, Schmitt, Gunderson, Welper. Moved by Welper, seconded by Kincaid that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Seven. Motion carried. The request of the Fire Chief to update the current 1997 Life Safety and Uniform Fire Code to the 2003 International and Life Safety Code 101 Fire Code was reviewed by Ned DeBerg, Fire Chief. The International Code relies heavily on a sprinkler system and the Uniform Fire Code requires center thickness of walls, exits, etc. The change would affect commercial, industrial and some residential apartments. The International and Life Safety Code will mirror the International Building Code recently adopted by the council and will make it more contractor friendly. The new schools are being constructed using the International Building Code. The International and Life Safety Code requirement to install a sprinkler system should lower costs. The International Fire Code does not affect residential buildings because the city does not require a sprinkler system in residential homes. A building with less than 12,000 sq. ft. will not be required to have a sprinkler system. The code gives more space to build under fire area and does not require a fire separation if the building is required to have a sprinkler system. The current code requires a fire separation and sprinkler system, while the new system will only require a fire sprinkler system for larger areas. Moved by Clark, seconded by Cole that the proposed 2003 International and Life Safety Code be forwarded to the full council. Ayes: Seven. Motion carried. With no further business before the council, it was moved by Clark, seconded by Gunderson that the meeting be adjourned at 5:06 p.m. Ayes: Seven. Motion carried. Nancy Eckert City Clerk
