COUNCIL WORK SESSION
August 13, 2001
4:15 p.m.
Council Chambers
Members present: Mayor Rooff, Krizek, Jordan, Gronen, Getty, Berry, Murphy.
Members absent: Anders.
Moved by Jordan, seconded by Gronen that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Five.
Absent: Anders, Murphy. Motion carried.
The council reviewed the sidewalk shaving procedure. Eric Thorson, City Engineer, reported that
his office has been trying to get information from Rolling Meadows, Illinois on their sidewalk
program and the use of sidewalk shaving. Mr. Thorson stated that the Engineering Department
will research the use of shaving in sidewalk programs, the equipment used and if other cities use
the shaving method and will bring the information back to the council.
Councilperson Gronen stated that the machine used for shaving is about the size of a small lawn
mower. In Rolling Meadows, Illinois, the city could do about 30 sidewalk panels per day.
Councilperson Gronen stated the city's policy currently requires sidewalks to be repaired if the
panel is 3/4" higher than the sidewalk, but using the shaving method the city could require anything
above 1/2" to be repaired.
Councilperson Murphy now present at 4:22 p.m.
Councilperson Gronen stated that citizens would probably use a contractor with sidewalk shaving
experience as it would save them money.
Mr. Thorson asked that the council approve proceeding with Zone 1 this year as the city is about
2/3 through the process.
With no further business before the council, it was moved by Krizek, seconded by Jordan that the
meeting be adjourned at 4:27 p.m. Ayes: Six. Absent: Anders. Motion carried.
