COUNCIL WORK SESSION
December 4, 2000
4:55 p.m.
Council Chambers
Members present: Mayor Rooff, Anders, Jordan, Krizek, Murphy, Gronen, Getty, Berry.
Moved by Jordan, seconded by Berry that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Seven.
Motion carried.
The redevelopment of the Grant School site was reviewed. The Waterloo Community Schools is
working to redevelop the Grant School site. The redevelopment involves many actions on the
part of the city, including vacating a street portion, vacating multiple alley portions, and the
conveyance of the vacated portions and other city owned property in the area.
Jack Fitzgerald and the architectural firm working on the site presented the proposed site to the
council. The existing structure will be left intact until the new school building is ready. The
playground will be relocated to the east, and the area to the north will become a soccer field and
playground. Parking will be in front where the current building is located. The structure will be a
single story, fully handicapped, media center, with air conditioning. The school will hold 400
students, with many of them bused to the location.
Paul Huting, Leisure Services Director, stated that the Leisure Services Commission has taken
action to transfer the park property to the school system.
The redevelopment site has gone through the Planning, Programming and Zoning Commission
and received a recommendation of approval for the portions to be vacated and the special permit
for the redevelopment of the site. Since a school is allowed in any zoning classification, a special
permit is required to ensure the city the site will work in unison with surrounding areas.
With no further business before the council, it was moved by Jordan, seconded by Berry that the
meeting be adjourned at 5:15 p.m. Ayes: Seven. Motion carried.
