Collier, Krizek, Mollenhoff.
Moved by Jordan, seconded by Mollenhoff that the Agenda, as
proposed, be approved. Ayes: Seven. Motion carried.
Darrel Wenzel, General Manager of TCI of Northern Iowa, updated the
council on digital compressed cable and fiber optic cable
programming. TCI currently offers 36 channels to all subscribers,
but customers will have their choice of 200 cable television
channels and high speed internet access by the next fall. The
company is currently working on installation of fiber optics in the
city. TCI will begin providing 70 channels of cable programming to
expanded service customers and 130 additional channels will be
available to customers purchasing the digital cable service. TCI
is planning to launch its Internet service with modems 500 times
faster than the current telephone modems and connection speeds
nearly six times faster than state -of -the art T1 lines.
TCI currently charges $20.95 per month for customers receiving
expanded service. Customers who subscribe to the digital services
will get 46 additional channels for $13.30 more per month. The
fiber optic network will allow 70 channels for expanded service and
digital cable customers will receive more than 130 additional
channels.
With no further business before the council it was moved by Getty,
seconded by Jordan that the meeting be adjourned at 6:12 p.m.
