In response to Mr. Promity's article "police chiefs pay" I was at the council meeting and a ward meeting of Mr. Grieder's at which that subject was discussed! Some of the discussion, yes, however not mentioned in the article was the need for a 4 year contract! Questions asked also were 1) how many other city employees, other than city council, have or been offered a four year contract? 2)Why are they starting with the police chief as opposed to an employee who has shown loyalty to the city for years? Neither of these questions have been answered to date by anyone!The people keep being told the city communication is transparent so when and how do we get an answer? As to the pay,this discussion has been had by previous council's and they always look at what other cities are paying for said position! In my opinion those who apply for a job with the city of Waterloo are made aware of the pay scale and can accept the position or decline it! When accepting I feel they Choose to live in Waterloo! In regards to the chief's pay I don't understand why being the ninth largest city in Iowa AND already paying what the fifth largest city in Iowa pays already WHY we need to jump to just under the largest city in Iowa's pay scale!? Assuming the article is correct,that chief Fitzgerald has recently looked for employ at Austin Texas,then a statement made at Mr. Grieder's meeting doesn't hold water!The statement was something like the chief is no longer looking elsewhere for employment! While I'm on my soap box a couple other articles concern me! The river project and fiber optics! As stated in the river project article a bike trail Waterloo to Cedar Falls, a mile long white water course and a marina to bolster tourism and recreation traversable by boat! A bike trail! Could this be done with recycle blacktop?We seem to redo our streets with blacktop as it is cheaper, so were told, however I haven't noted a bike trail that's not new concrete! White water! I'm not convinced this will create a huge economic impact for the city but could create a large liability exposure! Marina! Let's consider a huge economic impact! Dredge the river and get large craft back on the Cedar River! Blackhawk county, according to what I find, has the largest boat registration in the state yet most leave town for water that will "float their boat".Think how much money leaves town that might stay here if one was able to boat the Cedar!? Fiber optics! I note the citizens of Waterloo and America, all grant money is some taxpayers money, are providing funds for this project.This will be a privately owned company but even though they will have our"contribution"we won't own one(1) share! Sounds like we have 2.5 million in this so please explain to the taxpayer how long it takes to recoup our investment dollars?!
