Veterans Memorial Hall
Members present: Craig White, Randall Miller, Richard Hastings, Scott McDonald, Marcia
Courbat, Don Ticknor, Marilyn Robinson, Mike Mrzlak, John Mrzlak(A), Jim Lentfer(A).
Members absent: Mel Wittwer, Ron McMahon, Ronald Nielsen, Michael Dennis (A), Sherman
Lundy (A) and Chad Hill (A).
Also in Attendance: Nancy Higby, Administrative Secretary, and Richard Hurtado.
Moved by Ticknor, seconded by Miller, that the Agenda, be approved. Ayes: Eight. Motion
carried.
Moved by Miller, seconded by Mrzlak that the Minutes of August 26, 2015, be approved. Ayes:
Eight. Motion carried.
Citizens Oral Comments
Richard Hurtado shared that he would be attending various meetings throughout the community
to support the representation of African Americans and increase awareness of opportunities to
join Veteran's events.
Treasurer's Report
Marcia Courbat gave the Treasurer's Report. Ms. Courbat reported that the commission has sold
a total of 2998 bricks totaling $151,100.00. The Brick Fund has a current balance of$11,959.22.
Ms. Courbat submitted checks totaling $500 for new brick purchases, bringing the new total to
$12,459.22. Ms. Courbat suggests using some of the monies from the brick fund to fix the area
around the fountain. Mr. White suggested having someone out to look at it and give an estimate
first.
Moved by Miller, seconded by Mrzlak that Mr. Hastings contact Schuler or Dolan for an
estimate. Ayes: Eight. Motion carried.
Ms. Courbat reported that the Cedar Valley Civil War Roundtable will be at Memorial Hall on
October 15. Marcia asked for 5 more Civil War bricks at$50.00 each.
Motion by McDonald, seconded by Mrzlak to approve the 5 additional bricks at $25 each. Ayes:
Eight. Motioned carried.
The section numbers need repainting. Richard Hurtado offered to repaint the numbers and
believes he still has black paint from the last year.
Ms. Courbat presented an invoice from Black Hawk Memorial for the engraving of 6 bricks,
totaling $150.00.
Moved by Miller, seconded by Mrzlak that the invoice from Black Hawk Memorial totaling
$150 be approved. Ayes: Eight. Motion carried.
Ms. Courbat received a brick order from Florida with a check for $100. She intends to use the
additional monies to fund bricks for those who cannot afford one. A $50 check was received
from Cedar Rapids, but no order form or phone number was included. She will mail them a
letter along with an order form.
Chairperson's Report
Craig White, Chairperson, gave a quick report on the 14th Honor Flight that just returned. He
was pleased with the crowd that came to welcome the veteran's home. This trip was especially

memorable, as veterans were able to witness the wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier.
Mr. White also asked the members to begin thinking about fundraising ideas for next year.
Committee Reports
Building, Grounds & Operations
Dick Hastings reported that the carpeting has now been completed. He will be contacting the
Fire Department to begin clearing the cob webs, etc. from the building.
He shared that he recently had an opportunity to review a scrapbook with numerous early
photographs (1940's) one of which showed the "original" Sullivan brothers.
Mr. Hastings reported on the ongoing project of indexing the 3x5 cards. They've gone through
approximately 6,000 and have many more to go. He estimates another year or so to complete the
project.
Education/Historical
Randy Miller reminded the group that there will be a Veterans Walk-A-Thon held on November
7, beginning at 10:00am.
Mr. Miller showed photos of fire rings that could be customized. Each fire ring will sell for
$150. Proceeds will be split 50/50 to support the Honor Flight and Memorial Hall funds.
Mr. White called for a meeting to be held on Wednesday, October 7th at 5:00 pm to work out the
details.
Finance/Fundraising
Marcia Courbat reported she is still working on the booklet.
Norm Blum will be bringing a group of Auxiliary ladies from Reinbeck to visit Memorial Hall
on October 19, 2015. They suggested that if we were willing to do this a number of times per
year, they would work on getting different Auxiliary groups together.

Mr. Miller asked for further discussion on the Civil War Roundtable visit on October 15th. The
group will arrive at 2:00 p.m. It was recommended to have pictures available of the veterans
whose bricks were being laid that day.
With no further business before the commission, it was moved by McDonald, seconded by
Miller that the meeting be adjourned at 5:38 p.m. Ayes: Eight.
