Our itinerary will include visits to various WWI and WWII battlefields, memorials, museums, and cemeteries. We hope to not only further comprehend our studies of European history, but also to understand the sacrifices by so many in the name of freedom. Upon our return, we would like to take the time to share our learning experience with others in the community. As a result, we have planned an event that will take place in the Columbus Catholic High School gymnasium. It is our hope that you will take the time to join us in our recognition of the service and sacrifices that so many men and women have made. At this event, we will be giving several presentations, show video footage and photos from various sites, and several students will share their experiences from the trip and the personal impact it had for them. There will be refreshments provided and a chance to socialize with the students. On behalf of the 2015 Columbus Catholic High School's Advanced Placement European History class, we cordially invite you to join us. This open-door, completely non-profit event, will be on Sunday,April 26, 2015 in the Columbus Catholic High gymnasium in Waterloo, Iowa. The doors will open at 5:30 P.M., and the Presentation will begin at 6:00 P.M. Please consider joining us in the opportunity to honor and remember the heroes that gave so much, so we may enjoy the freedoms we have today. Ayes: Eleven. Motion carried. Citizens Oral Comments Craig Clark, Building Official, reported that the City is moving forward with plans to lay carpet tiles on all open floor areas in the Memorial Hall. He showed a sample and said that the carpet tiles would be laid over the existing VCT. He also mentioned that he's been looking into replacing light fixtures that meet the historic preservation standards. Mr. Clark noted that anything over 40 years old is considered historical. Several members shared their concerns with Mr. Clark, including weather stripping for the glass front doors, putting in an additional outlet upstairs so we can move forward with getting Fiber Optics, the leaking roof/downspouts and possibly installing a ceiling fan downstairs. Mr. Clark stated he would look into each of these and would also talk with Matt O'Brien regarding the use of Wi-Fi with the Fiber Optics. Treasurer's Report Marcia Courbat gave the Treasurer's Report as of March 25, 2015. Ms. Courbat reported that there were no brick sales to report for February and March. A total of 2,872 bricks have been sold since 1999, bringing in a total of$144,600. The March 25th balance in the General Fund is $8,681.10. Nancy Higby, Administrative Secretary, handed a check to Ms. Courbat for 1 brick that was received at the Fire Station. Ms. Courbat reported that Dick Hasting discovered that the Post Office box had been closed due to non-payment. Mr. Hastings found that PO Box 1946 was still available, and did pay a total of $101 to cover a full year, which includes a lock change and keys. Ms. Courbat showed a receipt for a cash payment that was made in August for $37, paying the box fee through 1/31/15. No bill has been received since then. Ms. Courbat said that Michelle Weidner was to give a presentation on the audit at this meeting but Michelle was out of town and unable to make it, according to Nancy Higby. Ms. Higby will ask for confirmation from Michelle that she'll present in April. Motion by Miller, seconded by Ticknor, to reimburse Dick Hastings $101.00 for the cost of the Post Office box. Ayes: Eleven. Motion carried. March 25, 2015 Page 2 Chairperson's Report Craig White, Chairperson, reported he has been working out the details of the display for Remembering Our Fallen for the 100th Anniversary. Mr. White shared that there will be T-shirts available with the 100th Anniversary on one side, and the Vietnam 40th Anniversary on the other. The Waterloo Bucks will be honoring veterans on July 4th, 2015, with their first annual Military Heroes Baseball cards. There will be thirty-six sets of cards representing each branch of the military, featuring local veterans who have been nominated and selected to appear in the card set. Mr. White said he is continuing talks with Mr. Robinson and individuals at the baseball park to put in the POW/MIA fixed seat. Rolling Thunder will be coming through with their motorcycles. Plenty of good things are set to happen during this celebration. Honor flights for 2015 have been lined up for May 5th and June 16th and September 22. Mr. White reported that the May and June flights are full, and added that terminal vets will be moved to the top of list. Unfortunately, this is probably the last year for flights with possibly one next year due to waning contributions. Mr. White reminded the group that the Annual Variety Show will be held on April 25th to raise funds for the honor flights. Committee Reports Building, Grounds & Operations — Richard Hastings asked if the commission members wanted to put flowers and fresh dirt in the Urns. Marcia Courbat commented that they look nice and nobody has messed with them in the past. Motion by Courbat, seconded by Miller to approve new soil and flowers in the Urns. Ayes: Eleven. Motion carried. Mr. Hastings would like to add 3 more light weight shelves in the office. Would go with particle board to keep the cost down. He would also like to find boxes to store the rolled flags in. He plans to look at the boxes that the shades came in, they might just work. He feels that acid free boxes are needed in either 5"x5" or 6"x6" by 40" long. A recommendation was made to check at the Box Factory in Cedar Falls to see what they had. Mr. Hastings shared (2) Blue Star Service Flags each with 5 stars, which he purchased and will not be seeking reimbursement. He would like to hang these upstairs with the Sullivan Brothers' picture. Ultimately he wants to find Gold Stars that can be laid over the blue stars. Education/Historical—No report. Finance/Fundraising—Marcia Courbat reported on the application that was sent to the Isle for funds for the 100 Year Celebration. She was told that the Isle does not give out small amounts ($5,000 is the proposed request). She was however encouraged to check back. Collections Manager/Registrar — Chairperson Mel Wittwer has been reviewing the collection policy and numbering system for artifacts. At this point, he plans to continue framing pictures in the back room. Mr. White questioned where the items will go? He said that before anything is done, it should be presented to the commission to approve or disapprove. Unfinished Business N/A New Business Craig White, Chairperson, announced the new appointments. March 25, 2015 Page 3 Mr. Miller suggested purchasing three (3) tables at the Electric Park Ballroom Variety show. One in the afternoon and two in the evening. It was generally thought that the afternoon table would best accommodate people coming from Bridges Senior Living. Motion by Miller, seconded by Ticknor to approve the purchase of 3 tables (1 afternoon, 2 evening). Ayes: Eleven. Motion carried. Mr. White stated that there is currently no active member representing American Legion Post #138, as well as the alternate member for the Disabled American Veterans #11. He asked Mr. Miller if he would check with John Mrzlak to see if he intends to continue as Alternate for Amvets Post #19, as his appointment terminated on 12/31/14. If so, he needs to fill out an application. With no further business before the commission, it was moved by Miller, seconded by Ticknor that the meeting be adjourned at 6:00 p.m. Ayes: Eleven.
