MEMORIAL HALL COMMISSION January 28, 2015 5:00 p.m. Veterans Memorial Hall Members present: White, Miller, Hastings, McDonald (application pending), Courbat, Ticknor, Wittwer, Robinson, McMahon, Mrzlak, Ambrosy, and Nielson (application pending). Also in Attendance: Suzy Schares, City Clerk;Nancy Higby, Administrative Secretary Moved by Miller, seconded by Ticknor that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Ten. Motion carried. Moved by Miller, seconded by McMahon that the Minutes of November 19, 2014, be approved. Ayes: Ten. Motion carried. Citizens Oral Comments None. Treasurer's Report Marcia Courbat gave the Treasurer's Report as of January 28, 2015. Ms. Courbat reported that the commission made the following payments; Mr. Hastings $54.21 as reimbursement for the purchase of two flags in November 2014, $325 for the repair of the chair racks and $125 for brick engraving. In addition, 3 bricks were sold in the amount of$150, and a donation of $50 was received, leaving a balance of $8,756.10 in the General Fund. Ms. Courbat also reported that Michelle Weidner will give a presentation on the audit at the March meeting. Suzy Schares, City Clerk, stated that an invoice from Black Hawk Memorial was received in the Clerk's office in the amount of$75.00 for the engraving of 3 bricks. Motion by Wittwer, seconded by Miller that the invoice from Black Hawk Memorial in the amount of$75.00 for the engraving of 3 bricks. Ayes: Ten. Motion carried. Ms. Courbat explained that four (4) bricks need to put in when the weather permits. Marcia reported that an ad will be placed in the Courier regarding the 100 year anniversary of Memorial Hall. Chairperson's Report Craig White, Chairperson, will present books by Mrs. Wilding, Memoirs of the Civil War, to the commission next month. Honor flights for 2015 have been lined up for May 5th and June 16th. Mr. White reported that the cost is up $5,000 for the flight. The Annual Variety Show will be held to raise funds for the honor flights on April 25th Committee Reports Building, Grounds & Operations—Richard Hastings reported that he is checking into getting tubes for the flags upstairs. The need is for 4' x 3" with plastic ends, but so far he has only found large tubes. He will be checking with the Historical Society in Des Moines to see if they might have a few for the Hall. Mr. Hastings feels the flags need plaques and explained that they cost approximately $100 each. Education/Historical—Randall Miller said Memorial Hall us still waiting on Fiber Optics. The City wants to run cables instead of having Wi-Fi. Mr. Miller reported that the Cedar Valley Civil War Round Table will be purchasing 5 bricks sometime in March, and that the group needs to meet soon for Memorial Day Celebration planning. January 28, 2015 Page 2 Finance/Fundraising—Marcia Courbat wants to apply to the Isle to get funds for the 100 Year Celebration. $5,000 is the proposed request. Ms. Courbat has been writing information for a pamphlet and said that Nancy Eckert has expressed an interest in helping out by using her computer to type up the information. Mr. White said we need to apply soon, as he believes the deadline is in March. Mr. White felt we should tie in the 40th year anniversary of the end of the Vietnam conflict with the 100 Year Celebration. Ms. Courbat said we need to get the checkbook from Michael Dennis for flags & cannons. Mel Wittwer will get it. Collections Manager/Registrar—Chairperson Michael Dennis absent and Mr. Wittwer filling in as his replacement. Mr. Wittwer questioned what the committee is for and whether it should be reworded or possibly eliminated. There is currently approximately $600 dollars to be used. Ms. Courbat explained the monies were received via grant from the Isle for use for flags for the cemeteries. Unfinished Business Mike Ambrosy reported that the UAW is considering getting a POW chair for the UAW Hall. The chair would be elevated to keep children off, but easily moved to be used as desired. New Business Mr. Dennis will be changing to alternate; Mel Wittwer to take his place. Mr. Hockey's term has expired; Scott McDonald has submitted his application as his replacement. Mr. Ambrosy's term expired in December; Ron Nielson has submitted his application for replacement. Chad Hill will submit his application as an alternate.
