MEMORIAL HALL tilir % 655 Cedar Street • Waterloo,IA 50701 • (319)287-9463 � °terloo \o Veterans Memorial Hall/Soldiers and Sailors Park The Memorial Hall Commission is developing Soldiers and Sailors Park at 655 Cedar Street. The park will display granite monuments and bronze plaques along the 400-foot brick walkway. The walkway will begin near the west side of the 5th Street bridge and meander through the beautifully landscaped park to the 4th Street bridge. The monuments and plaques will commemorate all wars and conflicts our service men and women have fought in. To help pay for the development of our Soldiers and Sailors Park, the commission is selling bricks to honor anyone who has served in the military. These bricks will make up the entire walkway. The name of the veteran, the branch of the military and the dates served will be inscribed on each brick. The location of your bricks will be in a master file inside Veteran's Memorial Hall. Bricks may be purchased for $50.00 each. Each brick will have three (3) lines of inscription with thirteen(13) letters per line. Order forms for the bricks may be picked up at any Waterloo Fire Station, City Hall, Waterloo Public Library, Waterloo Center for the Arts, and the Leisure Services office. Citizens Oral Comments None Treasurer's Report Marcia Courbat gave the current Treasurer's Report. Ms. Courbat reported that the commission has sold 2849 bricks at $50.00 each and 5 bricks at $250.00 each totaling $143,700.00, 2 additional bricks were purchased in the amount of $100.00 leaving the current balance at $8,754.73. She also stated that she wrote an article to the Courier promoting brick sales. Moved by Ticknor, seconded by Hockey to pay invoice in the amount of$100.00 to Black Hawk Memorial for engraving of 4 bricks. Ayes: Eleven. Motion carried. Chairperson's Report Al f vrtul Chairperson White stated that the Me ial Day Parade was a success. The presentation made by Garret Gingrich, . . was outstanding and made one be proud to be an American. There was difficulty working with the ROTC volunteers as they were very disrespectful, but the volunteer students from Hudson Schools were respectful and ready to help put up the flags at the cemetery. Next Thursday night is the Honor Flight dinner. Dubuque is no longer participating in the Honor Flight program. Committee Reports Building, Grounds & Operations—Richard Hastings reported that the Military Coalition contacted Memorial Hall to plan a luncheon for Flag Day June 14th, 2014 to be held at Memorial Hall. Mr. Hastings explained what their responsibilities are and also would attend the event to insure all guidelines where followed. Moved by Ambrosy, seconded by Mrzlak that the luncheon be held for the Military Coalition on Flag Day June 14th, 2014. Ayes: Eleven. Motion carried. Mr. Hastings also asked to purchase or check the availability of having an answering machine for Memorial Hall. Education/Historical—Randall Miller reported that he met with former Mayor, John Rooff, and Mr. Rooff purchased two big screen TV's for Memorial Hall. The 60" will be in the upper level and the 40" in the lower level. Mr. Roof has asked that a donation receipt be typed and mailed to him. The members still seek to have another larger TV or possibly a projector and screen for the lower level. The commission decided they would explore some different avenues. Finance/Fundraising—Marcia Courbat working with some local church youth groups to help with Memorial Hall and was disappointed with the results from the leaders. Ms. Courbat presented two invoices from Mr. Hastings to be paid. Moved by Ambrosy, seconded by Hockey for payment to Mr. Hastings for $30.00 on potted flowers and $50.00 for 2 — 5X8 flags purchased from the Amvets store located within Memorial Hall. Ayes: Eleven. May 28, 2014 Page 2 Collections Manager/Registrar-Chairperson Michael Dennis reported that he has 50 refurbished frames/photos and that 27 frames were hung in the upper level and 23 lower level. Mr. Ambrosy thanked Mr. Dennis for his continued effort working with the artifacts at Memorial Hall. Unfinished Business None New Business None. Citizens Oral Comments None Treasurer's Report Marcia Courbat gave the current Treasurer's Report. Ms. Courbat reported that the commission has sold 2856 bricks at $50.00 each and 5 bricks at $250.00 each totaling $144,050.00, 7 additional bricks were purchased in the amount of $350.00 leaving the current balance at $9,074.73. She stated that she wrote a thank you to Major Garrett and former Mayor John Roof as recommended at the last meeting. She is working with the Courier to place an article about the 100 year anniversary of Veterans Memorial Hall and promoting brick sales. They encouraged her to place the article closer to Veterans Day. Chairperson's Report Chairperson White asked Mr. Mrzlak the status of the flag placements. Mr. Mrzlak responded that he is working with Sandie Greco, Traffic Operations Superintendent, to change the placement of flag location throughout the city Committee Reports Building, Grounds & Operations—Richard Hastings prepared a listing of repairs that needed to take place at Memorial Hall to include: down-spout paint, paint peeling in two areas on the 2nd floor, eave troughs painted and repaired where leaking, men's bathroom paint and plaster problems, repaint front steps, tiles in the back stairway coming loose, replace rotten window seals and tiles on roof are leaking. He also stated that there are several boxes of war bonds/war stamps from World War I in the attic that need to be attended to. The consensus of the committee was to keep a few of the records and destroy the rest. Education/Historical—Nothing to report. Finance/Fundraising—Marcia Courbat stated that a brick needs to be replaced (Mr. Grim) due to spelling of name and placed in a different location. Collections Manager/Registrar-Nothing to report. Unfinished Business Moved by McMahon, seconded by Ambrosy to approve the storage of property vacated by Amvets Post#19 at Memorial Hall. Ms. Kobliska reported on items that were in question at the last meeting to include: purchase of a 60" TV, landscaping, answering machine purchase, and fiber optics. New Business Doty-Simpson-Taylor, PhD USAF with the Sister Soldier Network, Inc. thanked the commission for allowing their organization to utilize Memorial Hall for the Flag Day celebration and would like to schedule an annual event at Memorial Hall for the Flag Day celebration and encouraged member involvement in the future. June 25, 2014 Page 2 Mr. Miller has been inquiring with the Black Hawk Gaming Association in regards to a grant for Veterans Memorial Hall. It appeared to him that there isn't any interest to get involved, but will continue to pursue other options.
