HomeMy WebLinkAbout04/09/1979 (3) Finance Committee Meeting April 31, 1979 Mayor's Conference Room City Hall, Waterloo, Iowa The Finance Committee of the City of Waterloo, Iowa, met in the Mayor's Con- ference Room in City Hall at 6:32 P.M. on April 2, 1979. Council Member Getty, Chairman, presiding. On roll call, Present: Dowie, Getty, Roehr and Wilharm. Chairman Getty called for business to be brought before the Committee. Council Member Roehr stated after meeting with Police on radios, he would sug- gest holding until toiiurrow the check so the City could find out whether month- ly, weekly or what; also the City has been talking about contracting for main- tenance on electronic equipment. In the following discussion mentioned was $500 plus for maintenance on police radios, Rosenkrans now doing work, etc. Council Member Wilharm said the City approved the contract so it Could pay the bill and Council Member Dowie asked that the contract be brought to the meeting next Monday. Chairman Getty instructed the check be sent and the contract re- viewed next week. C h a i r m a n Getty read a letter from Human Rights Commission reporting higher new rental rate per month and new three year contract. A discussion followed and Chairman Getty asked that B. J. Furgerson, Director, be respectfully re- quested to be present at the next Monday night's Finance Committee Meeting (April 9, 1979) at 6:30 P.M. to explain the increase back in November and the Committee just getting it now and if her askings in the budget hearing reflected this rent increase in her budget for F.Y. 1980. Personnel Director Hollingsworth reported the schedule of recommendations for non-union and professional increases for F.Y. 1980 have been pretty much com- pleted and were within 7% and that a draft would be submitted for Council's review. In the discussion that followed it was brought out the increases were 7% with the exception of six positions which were higher; the Mayor's increase was 7%, effective January, 1980; the increases would fit into the budget; question raised whether young person without experience should be paid the same as person with fifteen years on the job and gets top salary because he occupies position; whether paying for position and not the work being per- formed; Personnel putting price on jobs and not on people; cost of living;etc. Chairman Getty asked the City Attorney if the Council could meet in a closed session and talk about salaries and the answer was yes. Chairman Getty stated a closed executive session would be called next week. Atty. John Mclntee for Minority Contractors told the Committee the Mayor was sympathic to splitting Contract No. 170 into smaller segments so they could submit bids. Finance Director Cdthpbell stated the radio maintenance contract was one year expiring June 1, 1979. Chairman Getty called for any other business, there was none, and then closed the meeting.
