HomeMy WebLinkAbout2005 MINUTES WATERLOO CULTURAL AND ARTS COMMISSION BOARD MEETING Rotary Room September 21, 2005 Attendance: Dale Phelps, Steve Showers, Marilyn DeKoster, Mary Ann Burk, Matthew Hundley, Barb Heitzman, Karol Rae Hoth Staff: Cammie Scully, Paulette Hawkenson, Maureen Hastings Scully called the meeting to order at 4:05pm. Previous meeting minutes were reviewed and approved. Financial Report/Hawkenson *Reviewed budget sheets *Discussed e-mailing of budget sheets. Not available at this time. New software is needed for this to happen. Burk questioned if an increase in the budget for the Youth Pavilion would be reflected soon. Scully said not until next year. *Motion by DeKoster to approve the report. 2nd by Burk. Voted and approved. Public Art/ Scully *$20,000-$25,000 is available for a project. Committee decided to move forward with seeking proposals for the Sullivan project, then reconsidered when it was found out that Richard Thomas, an artist from New Orleans may settle in the area for several months. This would be a great opportunity to work with an artist with national stature on a mural project for downtown Waterloo. Details are being worked out to have him take on such a project. Marketing/ Scully * A meeting was held. Room rental brochure is being developed. Kendra Richman is doing the writing and Chawne Paige is designing. More later. Finance Committee/Hoth * Hoth arranged a meeting date for October 19, 3:00pm, here at the Art Center—prior to the board meeting. Education/Heitzman and DeKoster *Committee met Sept. 20. Watched the virtual tour of interactive exhibits proposed for JAG I, II, III. *Architect, Chris Dahl who has worked on many past Jr. Art Gallery exhibits volunteered to work assist with designing the Global Village. * Scully noted The Children's Museum from Iowa City will lend an African themed exhibit to installed in JAG III. WCP/WCA / Scully We will extend the curre t contract for WCP to determine how increases in utilities may effect a future contract. urk suggested letting WCP know in writing that the contract may reflect an increase n xt year based on utilities. The board members agreed. Collections and Exhibitions/ Scully *The committee accepted 63 new works into the permanent collection. Documentation can be obtained from Kent Shankle. LOUD /Hundley *Iowans for a Better Future (IA 365), made a formal stop in Waterloo 2 weeks ago. *The committee is working on mergings to be made into CV 365. The VIEW is being reviewed from Iowa City. Friends of the Art Center/ Scully *The board met last night. They are planning the FOAC member's only event on the 14th of October, 5:30-7:30pm—which is a preview event for the Chagall exhibit. The event is called ChaGala. Director's Report/and Campaign Update / Scully *The Groundbreaking Event is October 10th, at 1:30. Marilyn is bringing 150 kids from McKinstry, they will sing an original song written by their music teacher. Gary Kelley will be asked by Tom to do an artwork for the Youth Pavilion. *Staff retreat was last week. They are putting together a new long-range plan which will be proposed to the board at the October annual meeting. Scully recommends staying with the same slate of Commission officers for another year during the building process for continuity. *A plan was discussed to ask the Mayor to extend board terms through the building process of the new Youth Pavilion—and to not make any changes right now. A motion was made by Phelps 2nd by DeKoster. Voted and approved. *A Virtual Gallery Opening will be held at Tony's Trattoria on October 5, at 5:30 6:30. Bob Coyle, food-service manager, is promoting the WCA through virtual tours/streaming of current exhibits and permanent collections on screens installed at Tony's. 10% discount will be availalbe on meals following the opening. *16th through the 27th, the Shego Band will be in our area doing workshops and concerts in conjunction with The Midwest World Fest sponsored by Arts MW. Burk suggested getting on KWWL for interviews. Hundley there is a back up on booking for up to 3 months. He will see what he can do to help.
