Absent were; Mr. Wallish, Mrs. Byrd, Mr. Hahn. The minutes were read and approved. The following reports were given: Mr. Willadsen - Interview with By Gsoden on Sound-Off. Mr. Clover was unable to go, so Mrs. Sadd went in his place. Mr. Stultz - Spot announcements are being well handled by K X L, but he feels we are not -making as much head was with news media as was intended. He suggested we write our own spot announcements and use the Courier on a weekly basis. Mr. Price - Question-naires are still coming in and he will report more at the next meeting. He handed condensed copies of the ones we have received so far. The committee deceided to send a resolution pertaining to sidewalks to the City Council. It would require all new construction to put in sidewalks and all existing property would have to add side- walks within a three year period. Mr. Stultz will contact Ed Galla ;er to help draw up this resolution. Mr. Stultz will make a personal call on Marvin Olds, to tald about the possibility of Mr. Olds being chairman of the sidewalk sub- committee. Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 5 - 11. Mr. Fortune of the Fire Dept. says everything is ready and our committee will cooperate if we are needed. Driver Education classes have contacted the committee and Mr. Stultz will visit the classes to explain the function of the committee. 1968 accident reports were handed out by Mr. Willadsen. He also reported on the florescent school signs. When the 3M representative is in town, Jim Willson will call Mr. Willadsen so they can discuss this project. Bicycle safety ideas were discussed for a possible safety check to be held next spring. It was deceided to put florescent tape on the crosswalk on 4th St. during the September Pedestrian - Crosswalk campaign. Others The City of Waterloo now has a "Waterloo Safety Committee" . This committee had its first formal meeting on July 29 , 1969 , in the Mayor' s Conference Room with all nine memberof the committee present. Out of this meeting came the first priority; to find what groups are sponsoring what Safety Programs as well as those groups planning Safety Programs in the near future . Having this information will help us coordinate these programs as well as to assist you however and wherever possible. We would appreciate your organization answering the three 4$j._following questions : 1 . Does your organization now have a Safety Program? If so , please indicate what phase or area. (auto , school , swimming, boating, or others) 2 . If you are in the planning stage for a Safety Program, please indicate whatp6ase of safety. 3 . If you do not have a program, would you he interested in participating in the Safety Program and if so , what phase? Mayor Turner, Jim ":Jilson, and all regular members were present. The following officers were selected to serve a one year term: Chairman - Mr. Kenneth Stultz Vice-Chairman - Mr. I. J. Willadsen Secretary - Mrs. G. E. Sadd The purrose of the Safety cohunittee Will be : To evaluate the overall sa2cty program in the coin iunity. The following areas of study were suggested: gun, school, bicycle, auto, boat, pedestrian, motorcycle, railroad, home, industry, swimming and swimming pools, animals, consumer goods, and civil disorders. A question-naire will be sent by the Mayors office to all groups listed by the Chamber of Commerce. The question-naire will request information about the existing safety programs and activities sponsored by the groups. Mr. Willadsen will prepare an accident table from the records at John Deeres. Based on the results of the question-naire and accident table, Sub=committees will be formed in priority areas. The Sub-committee chairman will represent the Sub-committee and will submit their report,in writing,to the Safety committee. A "Back to School - Drive Safely" campaign was planned with the following assignments. Jim Wilson - contact AAA about bumper stickers and the Courier about inserting them into the newspaper. Also check the possibility of safety lanes with the Jr. Police handing out stickers. Mr. Stulta —contact Courier about one page safety ad. Mr. Button - contact radio and TV stations about spot announcements. Date for this campaign will be the last week of August. Mr. Wallish moved, the regular meetings of the Safety committee be on the last Thursday of each month at Li.: 30 p.m. The next meeting will be Aug. 28, 1969. The minutes were read and approved. Each month, copies of the minutes will be mailed to each member by Jim Wilson. It was reported that John Wallish and Kenneth Stultz met to compile the question-naire and that approximately 200 were mailed to area clubs. Several replies have been received and these were turned over to Mr. Price so he could condense the information and report to the committee in Sept. Mr. Stultz reported that the Back to School safety program is ready. Bumper stickers will be given to each child to take home from school. Mr. Clover will obtain permission from Dr. Hohl and notify Jim Wilson. Mr. Stultz met with Ted Stevens of the Courier and explained the purpose of the committee. The Courier agreed to give a one quarter page once a week or a half page twice a month or a full page once a month or a combination. They will take pictures and do the lay-out. It was suggested the following areas could be established as sub- committees: Gun, School, Automobile, Bicycle, Swimming and Swimming Pools, Home, Industry, Boat, Pedestrain, Motorcycle, Railroad, Civil Disorders, Consumer Goods, and Drug Abuse and Alcohol. Questionnaires are being sent to all groups in Waterloo in order to find out what type of safety programs and organizations are already being conducted in our community. Based on this information, the safety subcom- mitteeS will be formed. Anyone interested in serving on the subcommittees is welcome. (?)
