HomeMy WebLinkAbout11.16.2022MEMORIAL HALL COMMISSION November 16, 2022 5:00 p.m. Veterans Memorial Hall Members present: Craig White in the Chair, Mike Hudson, Mel Wittwer, Frank McCaw, James Lentfer, Mike Mrzlak, John Mrzlak, David Grimm (A) and Angela Hickok (A). Randy Miller joined by phone at 5:13pm. Absent: Scott McDonald, Don Ticknor, Marilyn Robinson, Matt Carpenter (A), and Richard Berry (A). Also in Attendance: Nancy Higby, Administrative Secretary Moved by Lentfer, seconded by Grimm, that the Agenda be approved. Ayes: Eight. Motion carried. Moved by Grimm, seconded by Wittwer, that the Minutes of October 26, 2022, be approved. Ayes: Eight. Motion carried. Citizen's Oral Comments - None Treasurer's Report — Vacant Nancy Higby provided an update on the current balances as of November 9, 2022 as follows: Brick Fund - $7,178.15; Flag Fund - $205.26; Courbat Memorial Fund - $1,000; Special Projects Fund - $500; Artifacts Projects Fund - $477.22. Moved by Wittwer, seconded by McCaw, that the Treasurer's report be received and placed on file. Ayes: Eight. Motion carried. Moved by Lentfer, seconded by Wittwer, for reimbursement from the Artifact Fund, for the purchase of poster board and easels used for the Veterans Day event, in the amount of $195.60. Ayes: Eight. Motion carried. Chairperson's Report - None Committee Reports Building & Grounds — Chairperson Mel Wittwer Mel Wittwer commented that Rick Hurtado covered the cost of the room dedication plaques. He also shared that three concrete pads have been poured for the future picnic tables but is unsure when they'll be placed. Two additional parking spots with the agreement that they won't ticket any vehicles during events or meetings. He said that Randy mentioned that he had contacted someone at the city to request that Courbat Lane be made into a one-way street. There has been no feedback yet. He and Randy spoke with the city engineer regarding the condition of the concrete at the handicap entrance as well as the fountain. The engineer said he would look to see if there are any engineering drawings to help determine how much it will cost to repair. He suggested perhaps a fundraiser to help cover the cost. Mel commented that the Veterans Day service went well. Randy Miller joined the meeting by phone. Craig White commented that the Community Foundation grants opened up. Operations — Chairperson David Grimm David Grimm reported that the committee would not meet again until next Monday so he has nothing new to report, except that they will attend the next council meeting for the second reading of the ordinance amendment on Chapter 11. Education/Historical —Chairperson Randall Miller November 16, 2022 Page 2 Randy said that he appreciated everyone for all the help with the Veterans program and that it went well. He acknowledged Rick Hurtado for funding the plaques and informational boards. He and Mel talked with Wayne Castle regarding parking situation and he was going to draw up some plans for more spaces by removing the grass section on Courbat Court. After talking with Mike Mrzlak and Dave Grimm about parking, Dave came up with a great idea of making Courbat Court a one-way street from W. 4th to W. 5th. Randy explained that he took the liberty of speaking with Sandie Greco on the matter and she explained that they would need to perform a traffic study first and said she would work with engineering as well. Mel asked for confirmation that the commission agreed to store the American flags at Memorial Hall. Dave Grimm confirmed. Artifacts Preservation — Chairperson James Lentfer Jim Lentfer reported that the committee met on November 7th along with Randy Miller, Rick Hurtado and the Grout volunteer. He shared that they briefly discussed the intern Jake and have made a plan to continue their artifact relationship with UNI next year. He gave special thanks to Angela for her efforts to clean all the display cases and entryway. He provided further details about the various efforts made to prepare the Hall for the Veterans Day program. He spoke about some Spanish American war banners and flags, which the committee felt would best be suited for matting and framing He shared that the next committee meeting will be held on December 5th Finance/Fundraising — None. Position vacant. Unfinished Business — None. New Business David Grimm commented that Randy had recently made a request to offer a $100 donation to Bill Quibell to show our appreciation for all that he does for us every year. Moved by David Grimm, seconded by Lentfer, to approve a payment of $100 to Bill Quibell for services rendered. Ayes: Nine. Motion carried. Jim Lentfer suggested the check be mailed with a letter of appreciation on Memorial Hall letterhead. With no further business before the commission, it was moved by J. Mrzlak, seconded by Wittwer, that the meeting be adjourned at 5:25 p.m. Ayes: Nine. Motion carried. Nancy Higby Administrative Secretary
