RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING PROCEEDING WITH FINAL
NEGOTIATIONS WITH MIDWEST GAS FOR CLEAN-UP PROCEDURES OF
AN OLD COAL GASIFICATION PLANT LOCATED ON CITY-OWNED
PROPERTY.
WHEREAS, construction crews working on an addition to the
Waterloo Recreation Center discovered the remains of an old coal
gasification plant; and
WHEREAS, preliminary samples taken of the waste material were
found to contain hydrocarbons that need to be handled in a special
manner; and
WHEREAS, research of museum records indicate that said plant
was operated by the predecessor of our current gas utility,
Midwest Gas; and
WHEREAS, Midwest Gas has tentatively agreed to clean up the
site and bear the costs of transporting and disposing of the waste
material along with all necessary monitoring and testing costs.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
WATERLOO, IOWA, to proceed with the final negotiations with
Midwest Gas for clean-up procedures of an old coal gasification
plant located on City-owned property.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 15th day of May, 1989 .
