Cole, Moved by Schmitt, seconded by Welper that the Agenda, as proposed, be approved. Ayes: Six. Motion carried. Discussion of Ban the Box Language Abraham Funchess, Human Rights Director, reviewed an amendment to the Code of Ordinances to add a section on unfair use of criminal record in hiring decisions also known as "Ban the Box". He explained that employers retain the right to review the criminal history of an applicant as necessary when a conditional offer of employment is being made but are limited prior to that point. Dr. Al Hayes with Cedar Valley Citizens for Undoing Racism spoke in support of the ordinance. Chris' Wendland, Attorney for the City, reviewed the proposed ordinance. Jim Chapman, 224 Bertch, expressed concern with the hiring of felons. Abraham Funchess spoke in support of the ordinance. He noted that he is•currently focusing on employment and will bring the rental property portion of the ordinance in the future. Dan Trelka, Director of Safety Services, spoke in support of the ordinance. Steve Dust, Greater Cedar Valley Alliance and Chamber, spoke in opposition to the ordinance. It was the consensus of the committee to place this ordinance change on next week's council agenda. With rio further business before the committee, it was moved by Schmitt, seconded by Morrissey that the meeting be adjourned at 5:10 p.m. Ayes: Six. Motion carried.
