DESIGNATING THE YEAR OF THANKSGIVING.
WHEREAS, the celebration of a Thanksgiving season has been a
national tradition observed by the people of the United States
from the days of the early settlers to the present time; and
WHEREAS, many of the great leaders of the Nation, including
Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, recognized the
importance of setting aside a time of Thanksgiving, and
Presidential proclamations have established the last Thursday of
November as a day of Thanksgiving; and
WHEREAS, in 1941 Thanksgiving was established as a permanent
national holiday; and
WHEREAS, in 1987 , the United States is celebrating the
bicentennial of the United States Constitution and the opening of
the one-hundredth Congress; and
WHEREAS, the United States Constitution has adapted to
changing times and remains a "living" document; and
WHEREAS, the people of the United States should better
understand the history of this great nation; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to give thanks to God for the
everyday freedoms that the people of the United States so often
take for granted; and
WHEREAS, the people of the United States should take time to
appreciate a land of plenty, a nation of vast human and natural
resources; and
WHEREAS, the United States Senate and House of
Representatives passed Senate Joint Resolution 254 designating
1987 as the National Year of Thanksgiving; and
WHEREAS, President Reagan signed Public Law 99-265
proclaiming 1987 as the National Year of Thanksgiving;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCILS OF THE
CITY OF WATERLOO, CITY OF CEDAR FALLS AND CITY OF EVANDSDALE to
support the designation of the year of Thanksgiving 1987 to
Thanksgiving 1988 as the Year of Thanksgiving and encourage all
Americans to participate in the observance of such year with
appropriate ceremonies and activities.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 16th day of November, 1987.
