The need for infrastructure is understood, as is the importance of a quality education for our students. We hope that both can happen without disturbing Miriam's Park.We believe that the proposed road location through Miriam's Park will have detrimental effects on the park, the environment, and our neighborhood, among other concerns. In 1963,Aaron Miller donated 7.2 acres of Miriam's parkland to the Waterloo Board of Park Commissioners as a memorial to his late wife, Miriam. Because of Aaron's forward thinking, we have a neighborhood park! Miriam's Park is the only park within walking distance for a young, growing neighborhood. It provides us with connectivity and healthy options, which makes Miriam's a part of the national trend! Our primary concerns are as follows Traffic: Roads generate traffic, which is related to other issues of safety, noise, pollution, and general kill of the park vibe. Environmental Concerns:The construction of a road on the parkland will likely have significant environmental impacts, including disruption of ecosystems, increased traffic, noise and potential pollution. The loss of trees will remove a significant amount of shade the park users rely on in the summer. Preservation of Green Space: Miriam's Park serves as a crucial green space for our neighborhood and community. Benefits of a neighborhood green space: Mental and Physical Health Benefits:Time spent in green spaces can help fight against mental health issues like stress, anxiety, and depression. (nrpa.org)The closer people live to a park and the safer they feet in the park, the more likely they are to walk or bike there and use it for physical activity. (cdc.gov 2024) Economic Benefits: Open walkable green spaces in communities are attractive to prospective buyers, enhancing livability and increasing property value. (epa.gov) Environmental Benefits—Trees and green spaces help the environment by reducing air and water pollution and absorbs more water than concrete. (cdc.org) We respectfully ask the City Council to consider alternatives for the proposed service road that do not involve the loss of our precious Waterloo parkland. And also please consider if the road is needed. Kindest Regards, Lauri Wright, Petition Organizer Encl. This beautiful park is 7.5 acres of trees, grass and nature. It has a nice playground with plenty of space for outdoor activities. It is a quiet, peaceful green space that provides connectivity to https://form.jotform.com/243454032579156 1/4 1/24/25,3:51 PM Help Save Miriam's Park! our neighborhood and to the community. Some make it a daily routine to walk, run, bike, stroller or wagon to the park. Miriam's Park is located near the west edge of Waterloo, IA, off Greenhill Road just blocks from the Cedar Falls border. It is the only neighborhood green space. Miriam's Park land was donated to the Waterloo Park Board in 1963 by Aaron Miller as a memorial to his late wife Miriam. The park has brought joy to many for over 60 years. Thank you, Aaron! Our Waterloo Leisure Services Commission shared our concerns with the school. It apparently didn't make a difference, as Leisure Services approved the request from Waterloo Schools to transfer a huge portion of property from Miriam's Park to the Waterloo Schools. In return the school will provide a new parking lot to replace the lot being used for the road. And connect the park to a recreational trail, which similar connections currently exist. We are giving up a great deal of land without any improvements to the remaining piece of park. Now the request for transfer is going to the Waterloo City Council for approval. The need for infrastructure is understood, as is the importance of a quality education for our students. And hope that both can happen without using Miriam's Park. THIS IS OUR ONLY NEIGHBORHOOD PARK WITHIN WALKING AND SAFE BIKING DISTANCE FOR A LARGE GROWING NEIGHBORHOOD OF PARK USERS OF ALL AGES. The proposed road raises concerns of safety, traffic, noise, pollution, adverse environmental changes, and spoil the outdoor park experience to name a few. The proposed road will take these benefits from park users: Mental Health Benefits - Time spent in green spaces can help individuals fight against mental health issues like stress, anxiety and depression. We play here often You do not take a property to a park a devoted man has given you to continue his love and you want to put a road thru when is enough drive around the park end of discussion don't put your own laziness of not caring about our neighborhoods Semper Fi do the right thing This was donated as a park! Not a parking lot! My favorite park in the area No valid reason for this, what a parking lot? I've been at this park a few times, and really enjoyed it. Grand kids had a blast! Waterloo, shame on you. Waterloo has lost so many wonderful parks through the years and there are very few that are in decent enough condition to even use. Keep this park, in fact, give neighbors more of them!! My son used to play in that park. It's a beautiful place and we need to keep our peaceful places. Loved Pumpkin park as a kid,tho it's no longer "Pumpkin Park,it's still a park and still has memories! More Green spaces! Parks are very important. People use parks for many reasons. Jogging, biking, picnics, sports, a place to bring children to play, dogs to run, a quiet, shaded place to rest (in the summer) and read, and to enjoy the beauty of the well groomed grass and shade trees. We need to keep these local neighborhood parks! Families have so few areas that are close to their homes to be outside. Greenspan are important for our health and allow us to get outside for exercise and social gatherings. 9 1 Miriam's Park Supporter Feedback 01.27.25 When my adult kids were young children, we lived near the park and went there everyday. Many years later, I took my grandkids there. It would be sad to see it go. Because it's beautiful space and should remain that way. We don't have enough greenspace. We need parks for new people moving to Waterloo. Kids need to play. Shame on you for trying to sell off park land. Need neighborhood parks and play ground equipment for the kids ! The city should not be closing parks or taking land from the parks to satisfy developers. This land was given to the city to be a park in someone's memory. It should all remain a park. It is a very bad precedent to start stripping land from parks when developers have a request. The development should only be considered if is viable without park land. Green space encourages home buyers to the neighborhood, serves as community gathering space, supports good mental health. We need as many green spaces as we can get. Myself and friends live near the border between CF and Waterloo. We enjoy and use the green space on a regular basis during the summer months and I'm petitioning to keep the green space as is. I am a lifetime member of this area of Waterloo. Still live in this area . This is the only I enjoyed this park, my children and grand children too. Park green space area. Parking lot is not a good use of this space. There is enough land to has changed throughout the years but should remain a green use another space without taking away the park. space!! I do not want to see any green area destroyed. Help save neighborhoods and the planet. I believe in preserving land & trees. We don't need any more roads built as the city cannot maintain the roads we have now! This park is in my backyard!! Older neighbors in this neighborhood have said it was promised to never build on this land when it was given to the city! Building in this park would be horrible for this area. Waterloo has other areas they can build!! 2 Miriam's Park Supporter Feedback 01.27.25 We need our parks I used to live near Sulentic Park, and I expressed similar concerns when a developer wanted to buy a portion of that park that was officially still owned by Waterloo Community Schools at Public green spaces with minimal distractions are an asset to the community. the time. Because green space is needed now more than ever►! LEAVE IT ALONE for ALL HUMANS, ANIMALS AND WILDLIFE. I used to go to that park when I was a kid and its a nice neighborhood park always has been. People have moved in that neighborhood because there is a park please don't take it away! When property is given to the City of Waterloo with a specific purpose, it should not be changed. Do you think the family that donated the land would are with this? I think not!! This is just downright wrong! We need more parks, not less parks. Donated land for a spouse remembrance shouldn't be used for a road when it has been a park. Green space is becoming so important to everyone. This land was donated by a man honoring his wife. It was donated to be a park, not a parking lot. Uphold memorial donation! Childhood Park Removing this green space is a backward move for the community. It is environmentally irresponsible. The city and school board should be educated enough that they don't have to be told why we need trees and green space. It is a heartless thing to do to the residents of the neighborhood. These neighbors have a reasonable expectation that the city will not lower their property values or create traffic where children have always The people in that neighborhood received ballots that did not played. Waterloo already struggles with image and now we will have a neighborhood include the option of voting on the new school changes. Now where children and families can't have a park. It should be noted that the park was they are loosing their quality of life for the school. There has to donated for those residents. be a better option. 3 Miriam's Park Supporter Feedback 01.27.25 At one time, Waterloo had some of t This the best city parks in the state. Many have disappeared! While this school is important for our children, so is the park. This is the only park in this area. Remember Pumpkin Park fondly growing up for children in the neighborhood stop taking areas away for children to go play Leisure Services and City gov't are not supporting the wants and needs of tax payers. It's Our park areas by neighborhood are too limited already. Taking insider trading at its worst. more space away to support some grandiose idea that has not Too many deals w/o voter approvals. had voter approval is wrong. My parents home is right behind the park on Fleur Drive. Grew up there 47 years ago and still bring my girls. Love that we still have families enjoying the fields with their kids, pets and with this petition, we can keep this great park and land for generations. There is not much area in CF or Waterloo where families can run free and enjoy the space such as this park and green space. Parks are such a vital aspect of life! They give areas to run & play for children & adults along with a place to interact & meet your neighbors & others in the community. Positive childhood memories at this park and the mental health benefits! This is the only park in the neighborhood. We need our gree spaces. I grew up in the neighborhood right at the dead end of the field from the park this park was where I would go almost everyday with my friends and walk my dog. The park and field are still the best place for families and friends to go. Do not take away this beautiful area for people to just make it ugly with more roadways that are unnecessary when there is other ways that could be done instead of taken away something good for people and the environment. 1 trunk tnis park snould be saved. I frequented this park as a kid and I took my kids there often and have taken grandkids I'd like to see it offer more like the original park did, but save as well this for now 4 Miriam's Park Supporter Feedback 01.27.25 The neighborhood is growing. Starting now or this spring within a few blocks from the park, over 100 housing units will be built The park is such a blessing for the neighborhood for the young and old, dogs and bringing hundreds of people to the neighborhood. This park humans. A family donated the land for a park. How can you take that away? A road and green space is needed. Make a road off Huntington Road through this park would be very dangerous. It's the only park/green space for miles. right by the school not in a neighborhood park. PLEASE! I live at the intersection of Progress Avenue and Sager Avenue and have seen families taking young kids to play at the park and the traffic at the intersection to get onto Greenhill Road. Having buses use he purposed road to drop off and pick up students and for cars and delivery vehicles to also use it will only make the intersection more congested than it already is. Also add in the additional traffic from the housing development under construction at the west end of Sager Avenue and the intersection will be more congested. Only one bus fits on the Progress Avenue between Sager and Greenhill. Imagine having several buses waiting to get onto or off Greenhill. The housing addition on Huntington Road is now connected to the roads of the new development and residents are using the roads for access to Greenhill at one of the two Parents with non school age youngsters use the park during outlets. school hours and I have seen the kids running ahead. I attended two meetings at Central school about this exact thing! We talked about how important Miriam Park was to keep as is and not put the road through it. To put a road through that park is pudding, kids, family, and visitors of the park in jeopardy. It's been a safe place for them to use and no reason to change it. The city council should disapprove of this road. The park is important to our citizens. We need green areas in order to survive climate change. I feel for the population in Parks are good for body and soul. A lot of people like jogging California but it is due to over urbanization. If we don't do better we can find ourselves in around and through parks. Parks also provide a green space the same sad situation. for our dwindling wildlife. I used to live near that park. Enjoyed the location during and since. It's a nice quiet open spot I love to take my grandkids to. They can play on the play equipment or just run around! We have picnicked there too. 5 Miriam's Park Supporter Feedback 01.27.25 This is a nice park that we go to multiple times a year when it's nice. Besides the park, my kids absolutely love the big rocks and exploring and running around the open area and big old trees. Live on Edgewood Dr My retired Mother still lives in my childhood home, and I see that park when I come home to visit. I miss seeing the pumpkin there from my childhood! misuse of land for a different purpose Should the City decide to go through with this project we must As an Environmental Educator it would be irresponsible of me not to want to preserve demand that they then create a green space of equal volume one of the larger green spaces necessary for the health of the citizens of the community. and number of similar aged trees somewhere within the city There must be a better alternative route into the location of the new High School. limits. We need the park to stay since there isn't one in the area. My grandson and I frequently use the park. I live on Fleur and he loves being able to bike to the park. I used to live in this area so I'm supporting my former friends/neighbors parks are community and city wide assets and Miriam has that place for the community. It is important to preserve to ensure that residents have this place I lived in the neighborhood for 35 years. It's heartbreaking to see more of our parks and green space being tore up. There are a lot of young families in that area that need this in their neighborhood. 6 Petition to Save Miriam's Park-AKA Pumpkin Park • According to the August Waterloo Planning and Zoning meeting, the Waterloo School District is planning a"service road"to go through Miriam's Park to the new school. • Miriam's Park is owned by the City of Waterloo, land donated by Aaron and Miriam Miller. • Waterloo Leisure Services has not received a formal proposal for the park's land, but we want to stay ahead of it. • A road running through the park will destroy the natural beauty and character of our beloved park. • The road will create traffic, safety issues, noise, pollution, and disruption of the peaceful atmosphere. • By signing this petition, you are joining neighbors in voicing your concerns and advocating for solutions that benefit everyone.
