I received a call from a citizen this morning that was concerned about the lack of barricades for the Summer Soul Classic parade that occurred on Saturday morning. We provided barricades at the start/staging area of the parade at East 4th and Lester as requested. We also provided police escorts at the front and rear of the parade. I am not sure if the parade or the crowd drawn to the parade was larger than previous years, but we had a few vehicles that got stuck in the traffic. In future years, do you think it would be advantageous to block the entire parade route with barricades? If so, I would encourage you to request additional barricades when you plan your next parade. We want to ensure pedestrian and vehicle safety. The Summer Soul Classic has become a cherished tradition that brings together residents, families, businesses, community organizations, and visitors from across the region to celebrate our city's culture, history, and community pride. This year's theme, "Legacy in Motion: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future," highlights the importance of recognizing those who have paved the way while empowering the next generation of leaders. The parade is scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2026, and will feature drill teams, dance teams, drumlines, local organizations, businesses, elected officials, and community leaders. We would be honored to have your participation in the parade and welcome any remarks or support you would like to provide as we continue to create positive opportunities for residents throughout Waterloo and the Cedar Valley. As a community-driven event organized by volunteers, partnerships with city leadership are invaluable to our success. Your presence would demonstrate the City's commitment to community engagement, cultural celebration, and neighborhood unity.
