Trenchless installation of conduit with casing pipe. 1.02 DESCRIPTION OF WORK A. Excavate launching and receiving pits. B. Install casing by trenchless methods. C. Install conduit inside casing pipe. D. Place backfill material in excavations. 1.03 SUBMITTALS A. Proposed installation methods and equipment. B. Gradation reports for bedding materials if required. C. Shop drawings of casing spacers and proposed spacing. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 CARRIER PIPE A. Conduit pipe installed within casing pipe: Comply with Section 26 05 43. 2.02 CASING PIPE A. Pipe: Use only new, steel pipe meeting requirements of ASTM A139, Grade B;ASTM A252, Grade 2; or ASTM A53, Grade B. Pipe maybe welded or seamless. Wall thickness will minimum of 0.188". B. Joints: 1. Comply with AWS D1.1. Weld all joints with full penetrating weld. Welders shall be qualified according to Iowa DOT Materials I.M. 560. Welds shall comply with Iowa DOT Materials I.M. 558. 2. Upon acceptance of Engineer, interlocking casing pipe connection system may be used instead of field welding sections of casing pipe. C. Pipe diameter: Minimum inside diameter as specified in Contract Documents. 2.03 CASING SPACERS A. Use manufactured casing spacers to position carrier pipe in casing. Do not use wood skids. 2.04 BACKFILL MATERIAL A. Excavated materials: Comply with Section 31 23 00 for excavated materials. Use only suitable material for backfill material. 2.05 CASING END SEAL A. Manufactured: Minimum 1/8"thick manufactured synthetic rubber casing end seal with stainless steel bands and fasteners. TRENCHLESS UTILITY INSTALLATION 23209.03.00 Page 2—SECTION33 05 23 ms1222 B. PCC: Comply with Section 03 10 00. Do not use PCC casing end seals with flexible carrier pipes. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 EXCAVATION A. Remove topsoil to a minimum depth of 12"and stockpile. B. Excavate minimum size pits necessary to safely and properly perform work. 1. Protect existing facilities, trees, and shrubs during excavation. 2. Place excavated material away from trench. 3. Grade and shape spoil piles to drain and protect adjacent areas from runoff. Do not allow spoil piles to obstruct drainage. Stabilize stockpiles with seeding and provide sediment control around stockpiles. C. Remove rock, rubbish, debris, and other materials not suitable for use as backfill. 3.02 TRENCHLESS INSTALLATION A. Select method of installation that is appropriate for soil conditions anticipated and will allow pipe to be installed to desired line and grade within specified tolerances; prevent heaving or settlement of ground surface or damage to nearby facilities; and prevent damage to carrier pipe and lining materials within carrier pipe. 1. Auger boring: A method that utilizes a rotating cutting head to form bore hole and a series of rotating augers inside a casing pipe to remove spoil. 2. Open-ended pipe ramming:A method that involves driving a steel casing pipe with percussive hammer. Front end of casing pipe is open-ended. Spoils are removed from pipe. 3. Pipe jacking:A method in which pipe is pushed into ground with hydraulic jacks while soil is simultaneously excavated. B. Line and grade: 1. Install pipe at line and grade that will allow carrier pipe to be installed at its true starting elevation and grade within specified maximum alignment deviation of pipe centerline. 2. When no deviation tolerances are specified in contract documents, apply following maximum deviations to carrier pipe. a. Gravity pipe: 1) Horizontally: ±1'/100' 2) Vertically: ±0.2" up to 100'; an additional ±0.17100'thereafter. Backfill in pipe is not allowed. 3. Greater deviation or interference with other identified facilities may be cause for rejection. C. Casing pipe Installation: 1. Install pipe by approved methods. 2. Use a jacking collar, timbers, and other means as necessary to protect driven end of pipe from damage. 3. Do not exceed compressive or tensile strength capacity of pipe during pushing or pulling operations. 4. Fully support bore hole at all times to prevent collapse. Insert pipe as soil is removed, or support bore with drilling fluid. 5. Fully weld all casing pipe joints. Use an interlocking connection system when approved by Engineer. 6. Fill space between inside of bore hole and outside of pipe with special fill material if space is greater than 1". D. Conduit installation through casing: 1. Clean dirt and debris from interior of casing pipe after installation. 2. Install casing spacers on carrier pipe sections as necessary to support conduit barrel according to pipe manufacturer's recommendations subject to following minimum requirements: a. Install spacer within 1' of each side of conduit joint and at a maximum spacing of 6'. 23209.03.00 TRENCHLESS UTILITY INSTALLATION ms1222 SECTION 33 05 23-Page 3 b. Do not allow conduit to be supported by joint bells. c. Lubricate casing spacers with drilling mud or flax soap. Do not use petroleum-based lubricants or oils. 3. Provide timbers for sufficient cushioning between end of pipe pushed and jacking equipment to prevent damage to conduit. Do not allow steel jack face to thrust against unprotected conduit end. 4. Position jacks so resulting force is applied evenly to entire end of pipe. 5. Assemble pipe joints in jacking pit before pushing carrier pipe into casing. 6. Close end of casing pipe around carrier pipe with a casing end seal. 3.03 PIT RESTORATION A. Remove installation equipment and unused materials.from launching and receiving pits. B. Place suitable backfill material in pit. Comply with requirements of Section 31 23 00. C. Restore site to original condition or better. END OF SECTION 1) D. P.
