Dear Sandie,
As part of the intersection widening and reconstruction project at the intersection of Iowa 21 (Hawkeye Road) and Orange
Road, a change in the thru-traffic lanes has resulted in northbound traffic being routed over a portion of the original
intersection's turning radius. As a result, northbound traffic on Iowa 21 is forced to travel over a dip in the road. Because
this situation was not discovered until early December, the necessary corrective action has been delayed until this spring.
We have met on-site with Brad Blough from Aspro, and have discussed this situation with Chris Fleshner from Peterson
Contractors(PCI). The proposed solution is to add a hot mix asphalt paving overlay to approximately 320 square yards in
the northeast quadrant of the intersection. The depth of this asphalt will vary from 2 inches at the milling locations to
approximately 5 inches at its deepest point. Estimated HMA quantity is 70 tons.
PCI has submitted a cost for completing this work as follows:
Bump Sign $250 Lump Sum
Overhead Signs $940 Lump Sum
Mobilization $2,500 Lump Sum
Milling Lump Lump Sum
Traffic Control $1,100 Lump Sum
Asphalt Paving $92 Ton
Total cost for this work would be$12,715.
While this work would have been necessary regardless of when the problem was discovered, and therefore would have been
a project cost, the additional mobilization charge could have been avoided if the work would have been included in the
original contract. Because of this, Earth Tech will ask PCI to invoice us directly for the mobilization charge, reducing the
total cost to $10,215. Because the project is running approximately $25,000 less than the original contract amount, it is
anticipated this extra cost would not result in costs over the original funded amount for the project.
If there are any questions,or should you need further information, please feel free to call at your earliest convenience.
Very truly yours,
Earth Tech
